tribute concert has captured the headlines – Paying tribute to the star - June 26, 2010 by jamesdean

Jackson’s music had a resurgence in popularity this year. I also like his awesome moves – his moon walk, and his crotch grab.” His father was a Jackson fan, he said. “Dad had all the albums when I was growing up, and I’ve carried it on from him.” Luke now had a few posters, but wanted to start collecting memorabilia, he said. This was part of their four-city tour. Just making the performance special for the audience,” said Gaurav. Jackson, 50, died suddenly a year ago today in Los Angeles, sparking an outpouring of grief from fans around the world. The group right now has around six members. “Currently we have very travel friendly people with us,” say the band members. DHNS.

He loved the way Jackson could turn “nothing into something”. “I just love his creativity. It was the perfect way to pay tribute to Jackson, who he had idolised since the age of three, he said. What we are trying to do is approach it from a different perspective and give the songs a new angle. It is a healthy mix of both,” said Tony. The agenda of the concert included a total of 15 songs.

Jackson: A tribute from fans, a lawsuit from dad - June 26, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

In Jackson’s hometown of Gary, Ind., hundreds cheered as the entertainer’s mother, Katherine Jackson, and his niece, Genevieve Jackson, to show up, along with thousands of others. In Santa Barbara’s wine country, people showed up throughout the day at Neverland, the playland home where Jackson once lived with his own zoo and amusement park. But not every memorial for Jackson was to be a tribute at the family home; city officials said they expected Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, unveiled a memorial to her son in the front yard of the modest home where he grew up. “This past year has been very hard on the family,” she told the crowd. “If it wasn’t for the help of all of you, we wouldn’t have made it through.” Jackson died June 25, 2009 at age 50, just before he was to begin a comeback tour. Michael, may you rest in peace. LOS ANGELES — On the day Michael Jackson’s fans paid their respects with tears, tributes, songs and dance, Jackson’s father filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the physician Friday, seeking more than $75,000. Murray attorney Charles Peckham said in a statement he expected his client’s innocence to be “proven in a court of law.” Away from the courtroom, numerous tributes to Jackson, both poignant and joyful, unfolded throughout the day. “I don’t know what to say. Adrian Grant, the executive director of the concert and a longtime friend of Jackson’s, said at the dedication, “A year ago we had to decide whether to cancel the show out of respect for Michael, or let the show continue knowing that we had a sold-out performance the evening of the 26th.

Several of Jackson’s relatives also visited the cemetery, going to its mausoleum, where Jackson’s body is entombed and which is off limits to the public. We decided to go ahead and commemorate Michael’s life, with what turned out to be one of the mourners, Courtland Llauger. Some carried bouquets while others were armed with cameras to document the moment. Authorities say Murray provided the entertainer with a mix of sedatives — including the powerful anesthetic propofol — that killed him. A year after Michael Jackson’s death caused a worldwide outpouring of shock, tears and tributes, the anniversary of his passing was marked on a quieter scale as fans remembered their fallen King of Pop with vigils, prayer and, of course, music. Seeing all his things makes it all come back to me,” said Yumiko Sasaki, a 48-year-old Tokyo office worker who said she has been a Jackson fan since she was 12. “It makes me so sad to think that he is gone.

In Jackson’s hometown of Gary, Ind., his mother, Katherine, was among hundreds gathered for a tribute. “I’m very proud to be here and will be coming here every year because we love him,” Leonia Lowery, 69, a retiree from Chicago, said as Jackson’s music was played over loudspeakers.

Dozens of white doves were released. “He’s been my idol all my life since I can remember.

Some carried bouquets while others were armed with cameras to document the moment.

But not every memorial for Jackson was to be a tribute at the family home; city officials said they expected Jackson’s mother, Katherine Jackson, and his niece, Genevieve Jackson, to show up, along with thousands of others. The complaint, which seeks more than $75,000, accuses Murray of professional negligence and contends the physician tried to conceal his administration of propofol after Jackson’s death.

Seeing all his things makes it all come back to me,” said Yumiko Sasaki, a 48-year-old Tokyo office worker who said she has been a Jackson fan since she was 12. “It makes me so sad to think that he is gone. The memorial consists of a commemorative plaque in the Lyric’s foyer.

tribute concert has captured our attention Jeff Beck Soars At Intimate Les Paul Tribute Concert, By Kurt Loder - June 25, 2010 by jamesdean

They were all on hand to catch the great guitarist in an uncommon context. His “All Access” column reflects his own views and not necessarily anyone else’s, including The Signal’s.

An outspoken proponent of music education in schools, Adams spoke a bit between songs about the value of music to young people, and how seeing music performed live can be a life-changing experience for kids. Nearly 5,000 applied, Sturm said. Find out more about Adams at her website (oletaadams.com).

Rus Paul, one of his sons, was on hand to observe the dedication of Iridium’s newly named “Les Paul Room.” May and her guitarist husband, Darrel Higham, shared most of the night’s vocal duties.

Big ups to Beck for carrying on the tradition in his own work.

But he’s most closely associated with the Fender Stratocaster, which has a throatier, more sinuous tone. Get more info at valleycultural.org or call (818) 704-1358. And he wasn’t the only weighty player in attendance. However, his two Iridium dates (the first one, the night before, had drawn such admirers as David Bowie) were a birthday tribute to Beck’s late friend, the innovative guitarist Les Paul, whose own style was clean, sharp and jazzy. She urged the audience to help keep music part of students’ learning experience in class. I can vouch for the first point based on personal experience, and second the second emotion. She periodically left the stage, especially during the many instrumental numbers. Wherever the chase leads him, it’ll make for a fascinating, not necessarily unsentimental journey. And you never know who else might show up. I’m not kidding.

The crowd was still buzzing at an upstairs party following the show. And tonight’s show? “I just went, Oh my god, there he goes again!” This week, music fans all over the planet, including this one, are celebrating what would have been the 95th birthday of electric guitar and modern recording pioneer Les Paul, who died last Aug. 13. Red carpet arrivals will begin at 7 p.m. and the show will start at 8 p.m.

Check back to this page on Gibson.com for exclusive video and photos from this sure-to-be-legendary event. Beck’s fiery, soaring style — which has been unendingly influential ever since he emerged as Eric Clapton’s replacement in the Yardbirds in 1965 — makes glorious use of maximum volume. Happy birthday, and vaya con Dios, amigo. Bringing on a four-piece horn section, he unleashed the deathless crunch of “The Peter Gunn Theme,” and then — out of nowhere — launched into a rendition of the Shangri-Las’ girl-group classic, “Remember (Walkin’ in the Sand),” that might have actually raised the roof if the club weren’t located in a basement. Absolutely phenomenal,” he said. Other guest performers joining Beck onstage included Gary “U.S.” Bonds, who wowed the room with his “New Orleans,” the rock ‘n’ roll party smash that was his first and most famous single in the early ’60s.  Rockabilly/jazz singer, guitarist and bandleader Brian Setzer also came out to sing during two songs, including the finale. “How does he do it?” Loaf pondered.

Michael Jackson fans pay tribute by revisiting his music, videos - June 24, 2010 by jamesdean

image

They are grown, they know they should get over it, but they still mourn. “I always laughed at Elvis fans who swore that he was still alive, but now I understand because all of us Michael Jackson fans think he might be hanging out with Elvis,” said Bridgette Cooper, 45, of Mitchellville. “Hopefully, we’ll start having some Michael Jackson sightings.” Other fans accept that he’s gone but still gather at makeshift celebrations to pay homage to his music and his genius. It came across that he was still their Mike. “I learned so much about him from watching that movie that even I didn’t know about him,” said longtime fan Wendy Richardson, 46, of Bowie, who was among a group of friends who waxed nostalgic about Jackson one recent day at Cooper’s home. “He turned me on in that movie. They buy his posters, wear his T-shirts and remember. Cooper and friends are gathering Friday at a friend’s home for dinner.

When “Maybe Tomorrow” came on, the mood went somber. “They were both men and it was surprising to me how much they felt for him and how they had no problem expressing it,” Cooper said. “We just listened to the music, sighed and shook our heads.” The hardest part, fans said, is the waste of it all. At 50, Jackson was still vital enough to hold his own with dancers half his age at rehearsals for his upcoming concert tour.

She’s going to a party Friday night, the first anniversary of Jackson’s death, but afterward, she’s going to watch “This Is It.” She first saw the film with friend Bonita Jones, 49, of Mitchellville. “Bonita is the one who bought me the ticket for ‘This Is It’ and we went to see it together at the movies on opening night,” Richardson said. The gatherings end up like mini wakes, like at Coopers’ house on Father’s Day, when she and two relatives broke away from a party to listen to M.J. songs on her iPod. He was sexy. Marion Watkins, 71, of Upper Marlboro, a retired auditor, said she’ll play his records, especially her favorites: “Earth Song,” which still brings her to tears, and “Human Nature.” She’ll catch the interview with his mother, Katherine Jackson, on NBC’s “Dateline.” “I was always so saddened by the criticism that was put upon him because that determined how his life was,” she said. “I always thought about how difficult it was for him to cope when he was obviously someone who truly loved people.” Richardson said she is trying to remember the good times. “My favorite thing about Michael Jackson was that every Saturday morning my brother and I used to get up early because his cartoon show came on,” Richardson said. “We would stand in front of the television and do the turnabout, you know the dance.
