NASHVILLE A security guard working at the CMA Music Festival in Nashville was found dead inside a medical tent on Friday night, police said.
Kristin Mumford, a spokeswoman for the Nashville police, said Fred Stapleton, 34, had been working since about 6 p.m. and was last seen around 10:30 p.m. patrolling an area of downtown near the Schermerhorn Symphony Center.
Mumford said he was found later inside a medical tent that was being used to provide aid to festival attendees during the day, but was not staffed at night.
Mumford said there were no signs of trauma and an autopsy was being performed. Mumford said he was working for Rock Solid Security.
The National Weather Service issued a warning about the heat and humidity in Tennessee this weekend, with thousands of music fans in Nashville for the country music festival and at the Bonnaroo music festival near Manchester, about 60 miles southeast of the city.
Highs were around 93 degrees in Nashville on Saturday, but the humidity was 50 percent, making the heat index 101.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center spokesman Jerry Jones said on Saturday that they treated more than 75 cases of heat-related emergencies during the first two days of the CMA festival, resulting in 15 ambulance transports.

Conan O’Brien Performs at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival
Ever since his highly publicized feud with NBC executives became public and he exited The Tonight Show after agreeing to a settlement with the network, comedic talk show host Conan O’Brien has embarked on his Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television tour. O’Brien, whose upcoming late-night talk show is scheduled to debut on the TBS cable network in November, performed at Jack White’s Third Man Records on Thursday night.
According to The New York Daily News, the talk show host brought his comedy tour to Tennessee on Friday where he performed at the annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Fans reportedly chanted “Coco,” a nickname that he earned during his brief stint on The Tonight Show, during his performance.
O’Brien performed renditions of popular songs that were originally sang by Elvis Presley, The Band and The White Stripes. The 47-year-old American television host cracked a joke about his current situation at the beginning of his set, telling those in attendance in Nashville, Tennessee, “In six months, I’ve gone from hosting The Tonight Show to performing at a refugee camp.”
The Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is a much-anticipated annual event that traditionally lasts for four or five days.

Tickets for the final day of the Pitchfork Music Festival, Sunday, July 18, have sold out. Three-day passes for the festival, which comes to Chicago’s Union Park July 16-18, sold out a while back. So if you didn’t snap up your tickets to see Pavement, Big Boi, Major Lazer, St. Vincent, Girls and many more play on Sunday, it’s time to call all your friends and see who has an extra ticket.
We still have single-day tickets left for Friday and Saturday, so you still have a chance to see LCD Soundsystem, Modest Mouse, Broken Social Scene, Panda Bear, Raekwon, and all the other artists playing the first two days. Buy those tickets here. But act fast! Saturday tickets will be gone soon.
In addition to providing a rewarding experience to music fans, the Pitchfork Music Festival takes its responsibility to the environment seriously, and we encourage our audience, musicians, and vendors to do the same. Last year, PMF recycled 46% of waste by weight (12 tons), and this year, the goal is to break 50%. The following are some steps we’re taking to ensure that our environmental “footprint” is as small as possible:
Recycling
Managing waste is a very important part of any large gathering, and PMF has put together a comprehensive recycling program to limit what we send to the landfill. Our recycling crew works with all of our vendors to help them recycle as much as possible, but we need your help as well.
If you come to PMF, please recycle your plastic cups and bottles, along with any cans and paper you come across. We will have more recycling receptacles than ever this year, and your participation is greatly appreciated!
Biking, Walking, and Public Transportation
We’re happy to announce an enhanced bike parking area under the Chicago Reader‘s biker village, brought to you by Clif Bar. Free, secure bicycle parking will be available at the south end of the festival site, which will help aid traffic congestion. We encourage you to bike, walk, or take the bus or train to and from the festival. For folks coming from the Chicago area, please visit the following to plan your trip: Chicago Transit Authority, Pace Suburban Bus Service, Metra Rail.
If you are traveling from outside Chicago, please consider using a bus or train for your journey. Check for trains or buses with Amtrak, Greyhound, and Megabus.
Thank you for being responsible in planning your trip!
Sustainable Power
All power for the festival comes from biodiesel fuel, which is cleaner than normal diesel fuel and reduces demand for oil. For more information on this energy resource, please visit the National Biodiesel Board.
Carbon Offsets
The nature of an international music festival creates the need for a lot of travel. All the plane, train, van, and car miles that bring bands and fans from around the globe to the festival contribute significantly to the pressing problem of climate change. One way to fight this is to purchase “carbon offsets” that help fund projects which reduce emissions causing climate change. Individuals, companies, and other groups can buy these carbon offsets.
We’ve researched different companies that do good work in the carbon offset market. TerraPass is one of the best out there; you can visit their website to calculate your travel emissions, and then buy reasonably priced offsets to cover your trip. You can also see TerraPass‘ past and present projects on their website.
PMF Artist Offsets
PMF is putting our money where our mouth is: This year, we are buying carbon offsets to cover the travel of all our musicians. Please consider purchasing your own!

The CMA Music Festival began Thursday, bringing hordes of country-music lovers to fill the streets of downtown Nashville. In addition to a bevy of music stages, the festival offers tons of family-friendly activities, a Sports Zone and the Fan Fair Hall, where fans can meet and greet their favorite country music stars.
The festival continues through Sunday, with a daily schedule of events and nightly concerts at LP Field featuring country’s hottest stars. Here’s a fan’s-eye view of Day One at the CMA Music Festival:

Some of the artists already announced to appear at LP Field during CMA Music Festival include Trace Adkins, Jason Aldean, Billy Currington, Alan Jackson, Kid Rock, Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Kellie Pickler, Rascal Flatts, Darius Rucker, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Zac Brown Band, and more.
Taylor Swift will host a free 13-hour fan meet and greet event during the Festival at the Bridgestone Arena, which includes a short acoustic performance.
This will be McGraw’s first appearance at the event since 2001, when he was a surprise guest during Kenny Chesney’s performance as part of the Nightly Concerts at LP Field and the event was still known as Fan Fair. His last announced appearance was in 2000, the last year Fan Fair was held at the Nashville Fairgrounds. He has participated in the event eight times since his Fan Fair debut in 1993. McGraw has won 11 CMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year in 2001; Male Vocalist in 1999 and 2000; Album of the Year in 1998 (A Place in the Sun) and 1999 (Everywhere); and Musical Event of the Year in 2007 on “Find Out Who Your Friends Are” with Tracy Lawrence and Chesney.
“We are thrilled to welcome Tim back to CMA Music Festival in 2010 and in his role as host of the biggest concert event of the summer,” said Moore.
The annual event is unlike any other: four days, 30 hours of autograph signings, 100 hours of live music, hundreds of artists and celebrities, and a party list of thousands of avid, singing and dancing-till-dawn fans. This is the sixth time ABC will broadcast this special – which invites the whole country to America’s biggest Country Music bash.

More Ups and Downs at Aspen Music Festival
Is the altitude finally getting to everyone? The dizzying swings of fortune for Alan Fletcher, the president and chief executive of the Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado, continue. Mr. Fletcher, who was fired by the executive committee of the festival’s board of trustees last October, rehired by the full board in November and given a vote of no confidence by the festival corporation (including board members, faculty and others) in April, has now had his contract extended for two years, through September 2012. The decision was made at a special meeting of the board on Monday, at which Rob LeBuhn, its chairman for the last year, announced that he was stepping down, effective immediately, in response to a majority vote. Mike Murray, the vice chairman, has been named acting chairman. The board will elect a new chairman, possibly at its next scheduled meeting, on June 29.The festival is also looking for a new music director to replace David Zinman, who resigned in April, strongly criticizing Mr. Fletcher. The festival season opens on July 1.

Laurie Anderson to Play Slow Music, Film Music, and Dog Music for Sydney Festival
Laurie Anderson to Play Slow Music, Film Music, and Dog Music for Sydney Festival
Laurie Anderson’s performances at Vivid LIVE, the festival she and her husband, Lou Reed, have curated in Sydney, Australia, continue through the weekend. After performances of her Transitory Life and selections from her new work, Delusion, earlier in the week, Anderson performs in the centerpiece event of the festival, joining artists like the Blind Boys of Alabama, My Brightest Diamond, Emily Haines of Metric, Doveman, Mark Ribot, and others on stage at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall for the Slow Music Night tonight. For the concert, each artist uses the idea of “slow” as a starting point, with Anderson and Reed leading an evening of collaborative music-making.
Saturday morning, on the northern boardwalk outside the Opera House, the festival curators will play for a decidedly different audience when they give the world premiere of Anderson’s Music for Dogs, a piece that has already seen coverage from news organizations the world over, from the New York Times and TIME magazine to the Guardian and BBC News. The event is free and open to all dogs on leads and their companions. Given all the rain Sydney has had this week, it’s worth noting that the wet weather contingency venue is under the Sydney Opera House vehicle concourse. Anderson talks about Music for Dogs and its inspiration, her own beloved dog, Lollabelle, in a video at sydneyoperahouse.com.
Anderson’s last scheduled Vivid LIVE performance is Sunday night at the Playhouse during Day for Night Movies, a marathon screening of documentaries, experimental art films, classics, and more with live scores and performances from Anderson, Reed, and other festival artists.
For more information on these and all the festival events, visit vividlive.sydneyoperahouse.com. For other upcoming performances from Laurie Anderson, visit nonesuch.com/on-tour.

To pre-order a copy of her forthcoming Nonesuch release, Homeland, her first studio album in nearly a decade, head to the Nonesuch Store, where you can also pick up a copy of the 12″ vinyl single “Only an Expert,” out now.
British magazine Pink Paper gives the album four stars, noting the “beguiling, beautiful and mysterious listens” featured therein. “Never an artist known for sentimentality or outbursts of passion,” says reviewer Richard Morris, “Anderson nevertheless manages to convey her sadness and anger at the War on Terror and its ongoing struggles,” leading to “many spine-chilling moments” on the album. Morris concludes: “Homeland makes you very glad Laurie Anderson is still making music, still totally unafraid to tackle issues other artists run a mile from.” Read the review at pinkpaper.com.
