Wednesdays madness – The New Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees - December 15, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

All of this year’s inductees, however, started in the 1960s — with the lone exception of Tom Waits, who released his first LP Closing Time in 1973. “I am still recovering,” he said in a statement. With any hall of fame, there are always going to be arguments about who belongs in and who doesn’t, and there will typically be outrage about people who have been overlooked. “I never really cared about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame…but now I am surprised to discover how much I DO care. “We weren’t about peace and love; we were too abrasive for L.A.,” said Cooper, who was born Vincent Furnier in Detroit, but grew up mostly in Arizona before he and his band headed back to metro Detroit in the 1970s and developed their heavy, classic rock sound. The 2011 class for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will include Cooper, Neil Diamond , Darlene Love , Dr. John and Tom Waits , it was revealed Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010. I’m wondering if I did something wrong?” Waits exclusively tells Rolling Stone that his thoughts turned to his mother, who died this year, when he got the call. Taken in a vacuum, that’s not a horrible group of musicians (Waits’ inclusion is especially inspiring, considering he has been consistently turning out great work for decades without a lot of mainstream recognition). “She didn’t respond to rock and roll per se, but she would have loved to have a reason to get all dolled up…and…the idea of having a Waldorf salad AT the Waldorf Astoria, would for her have been the cat’s pajamas. When it comes to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions, there are never any sure things – not even Bon Jovi , who was just named 2010′s biggest touring act in the world on Tuesday. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five became the first rap group inducted in 2007 and since then, what should have been a tidal wave of inductees has been reduced to a wading pool.

But when you look at the nominees that got denied (especially LL Cool J, Beastie Boys and Bon Jovi) and the groups who continue to get overlooked (Kiss, Rush), it seems especially insane that this is the group. “I was on my way to Atlantic City in a limo when I got the call,” she says. “It still hasn’t hit me yet.

Both Diamond and Cooper said they weren’t anxiously waiting. And outsiders, although they may take a step backward when they see us, they definitely respect Detroit artists.” Cooper said he couldn’t believe that the Rock Hall induction lined up perfectly with the classic lineup playing together and the recording of “Welcome to My Nightmare 2,” the sequel to the classic album released 35 years ago.

“You know it crosses your mind, but then you think of all the guys who aren’t in there, some of them before you, and you go, ‘Wow.’ You realize that it’s a waiting game,” he said an interview. ‘You Give Love a Bad Name,’ ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’ and ‘Livin’ On a Prayer’ the latter inspiring more than one child to listen with awe as Richie Sambora “talked with his guitar” were stadium classics that can now be found in every karaoke songbook. 25 years later, the group continues touring to sell-out arenas. “I don’t think you sit around holding your breath on it.” The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Who missed out Several other nominated groups will have to wait another year for their turn.

“I doubt there’ll be a snake there though…If you look at the list of past inductees it’s all of my heroes, from Pete Townshend to The Yardbirds to The Beatles to The Stones. It’s everybody that we listened to in order to become Alice Cooper, so it’s pretty amazing that those are the same people that actually voted for us.”

Alice Cooper: Not ‘the Peter Rose of rock’ anymore - December 15, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

“It got to the point where I was saying, ‘OK, I’m the Pete Rose of rock ‘n’ roll!’ So now that it’s a reality, it’s a different take on it,” he tells Billboard . “Now I sit there and go, ‘Wow. With any hall of fame, there are always going to be arguments about who belongs in and who doesn’t, and there will typically be outrage about people who have been overlooked. We’ve got to really get up and play, and assume the position of being in the Hall of Fame.’ It’ll be great.” Cooper says the only time he was upset about not being on the ballot was in 2009, when Kiss was nominated before him. Five other musical acts will.

It was announced today that the pair have been drafted into the organisation, along with Darlene Love, Dr. John and Tom Waits. LL Cool J is still waiting. Geils Band, Donna Summer and Chic. Diamond, Alice Cooper, Darlene Love, Dr. John and Tom Waits will be enshrined in the Cleveland hall. “You know it crosses your mind, but then you think of all the guys who aren’t in there, some of them before you,” he said. Pianist Leon Russell , the first recipient of the new Award, has been an in-demand session performer since the ’60s, and lately recorded an album of duets with Elton John. The third time was the charm for Love, who had been nominated twice before. “You realize that it’s a waiting game.” Other eligible musicians for induction this year, like Bon Jovi, LL Cool J and Donna Summer, will have to wait until next year.

Tulsan Leon Russell was honored with a musical excellence award, previously the sideman category. Meanwhile, people like LL Cool J got left out in the cold. All were nominated but denied entry into the hall for 2011. Unlike a lot of early hip-hop crossovers, LL came from a background that was heavily focused on lyricism (rather than samples or one-off novelties). Are we invisible here, or what?’ ” Cooper, along with Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Darlene Love and Tom Waits are the class of 2011, who will be inducted on March 14 in New york. Among the acts not making the cut this time: First-time nominee Bon Jovi, as well as multiple nominees LL Cool J, Donna Summer, the Beastie Boys, J.

Wednesdays punchline – Bono Calls ‘Spider-Man’ Musical ‘Pop-Up, Pop-Art Opera’ - November 30, 2010 by jamesdean

photo

According to U2 bandmates Bono and The Edge, who composed the production’s score, that’s because comic books and rock and roll music are a natural fit. “There’s always been a thing with punk rock bands and comics,” Bono told MTV News during an interview last week. But, “It went much better last night than expected,” said producer Michael Cohl. “You see it in Roy Lichtenstein’s work, all the pop artists’ work; they all sample from comics.” Featuring high-flying stunts and a multitude of moving set pieces that put the audience in the middle of the action when Spider-Man battles Green Goblin, Carnage and the rest of the show’s villains , “Turn Off the Dark” is treading new ground. It survived only a year before closing. “We don’t want to see him in harm’s way.” Mr. Abdo flew from Minneapolis to New York on Monday to see the second preview, slated for Wednesday, in what he called a long-planned gesture of support for Mr. Carney. He said he was confident in the musical’s overall safety, but added that Mr. Carney is an actor and rock singer—not a stunt man—and he wanted to take a look at the conditions under which his client is working.

“We don’t really know what to call it, because there are so many aspects to it,” he explained. “There’s some uncharted territory in this,” he said. I think that’s what it is.” The Edge acknowledged a similar difficulty in comparing “Turn Off the Dark” with anything that came before it. “It is elements of rock and roll, it’s elements of circus, it’s elements of opera, of musical theater,” he said. “We’re comfortable with what we’ve seen, so at this point we don’t have plans to return back to view any more maneuvers,” Mr. Rosales said. “It is so many different things, and when we started the process, we promised we’d do something that hasn’t been done before. And really, we, I think, have managed to do that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.

The History Of Indie Rock Music In The UK (Andrew J Parker) - November 22, 2010 by jamesdean

Indie rock can be (loosely) defined as a melodic or punk genre guitar-based of rock music, and a means of producing that music, that originated in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s and early 1980s as an alternative to the mainstream music of the time. The indie genre, it could be claimed, was mainly inspired by the Sex Pistols and the punk rock movement in the UK, which led to a more DIY approach to music and inspired young people to form bands. For example, on 4 June 1976 in the Lesser Free Trade Hall in Manchester – in a smaller room above the main hall, the Sex Pistols played a gig that is widely believed to have been the catalyst to the punk rock movement, New Wave, and the subsequent indie movement.

Many of the musicians who attended the either of these two famous gigs by the Sex Pistols (as they returned to play another date) went on to form some of the important and critically acclaimed bands of the era. People who are believed to have attended these gigs include The Smith’s front man Morrissey, Factory Records founder Tony Wilson, members of Joy Division/New Order (Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook), members of the Buzzcocks (Howard Devoto, Pete Shelley, Steve Diggle), and The Fall’s Mark E Smith.

In the United Kingdom, independent DIY record labels were started, like Factory Records and Rough Trade. These labels released music by artists (on a much smaller promotional budget) who perhaps the major labels weren’t too interested to begin with – until they realised that there was actually a big market for the style of music. However, ‘indie labels’ gave a band more credibility (‘indie cred’) than if they went with an unfashionable large and money-led label.

Some definitive British indie bands of the late 1970s and 1980s were The Smiths, The Specials, The Stone Roses, The Cure, Happy Mondays, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Orange Juice, My Bloody Valentine, Siouxsie and the Banshees, whose ‘classic’ music during this time directly influenced 1990s alternative genres such as shoegazing and also Britpop – which eventually went on to blur the line between independent and major labels. In the mid-1990s, led by Oasis and Blur, a list of Britpop indie bands dominated the singles and album charts in the UK. More conventional ‘pop acts’ were often beaten in sales by more guitar based indie acts. The Britpop genre included artists such as Pulp, Supergrass, The Verve, and Radiohead. This trend has continued into the present day, with bands such as Artic Monkeys, The Strokes, The Libertines, Klaxons etc, are still able to chart in the upper reaches of sales charts.

However, many so-called indie bands are on major labels (or are on indie labels that are owned by major labels). Nowadays, ‘indie music’ is a term used as genre term like ‘Hip Hop’ or ‘Dance’ and the genre is still covered by major magazines, music journalists and music websites such as the NME, Rolling Stone, Q Magazine, Pitchfolk, and Drowned In Sound. But while the term has perhaps lost it’s initial independent meaning, the name remains as a constant reminder of the DIY methods and spirit that was carried out by bands and labels during the 1980s.

john_stag2 – a backstage pass picture by Gdubster - November 11, 2010 by jamesdean

While I was looking for something great to write about I found this picture: john_stag2.
I want you to enjoy Gdubster’s image of backstage pass as much as I did.

backstage
john_stag2, according to the author:
Since John is a die-hard Rock Band fan (he even wanted a Rock Band Lounge area at his wedding), I decided to make that the theme. Studying the series of games released for XBOX, Wii and PS3, I found out that the initial font used in the logo is Avant Garde. Using the font as a starting point and using the Rock Band logo as a guide, I stylized our logo “John’s Stag” to mimic all the visual elements. This was done in Adobe Illustrator to ensure perfect output no matter what medium the logo would be used on.

Looking for the location of the original backstage pass picture because it might come in handy.

At first glance, the Motel 6 “Rock Yourself to Sleep” tour sounds like an exercise in futility. Rock is supposed to get you juices flowing, your blood pumping and adrenaline coursing through those veins of yours, so isn’t the concept of a tour putting you to sleep a bit counterintuitive?…

I am shocked to hear: 30 Rock broadcasts live episode - October 15, 2010 by jamesdean

image

– 36 minutes ago Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin and the rest of the 30 Rock cast took part in two live broadcasts of an episode of the hit comedy show. The live broadcast also meant the cast could make reference to topical events. Last night, 30 Rock aired its live episode, and as we predicted , it was pretty much snafu-free. The plot does not really matter: what matters is how a usually scripted show played live. When she heard that all the Chilean miners had been freed, but were upset at what she had said, she replied: “I guess they are geniuses for getting stuck in a mine.” Other joke punchlines included Fox News, introduced as a division of Nonsense Inc., as well as ObamaCare and the mother of “Jersey Shore” star Snooki. Some punchlines were inside jokes about the live episode and its dangers. At the beginning of the show, as Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon entered the office of Alec Baldwin’s Jack, who was trying to stay sober, he asked: “Does it seem weird to you in here? … Everything looks like a Mexican soap opera.” Moments later, he told her: “Have a good show. East Coast: In a flashback, Julia Louis-Dreyfus calls to Jonathan, “Yeah, Chai Boy, get in here.

It was 30 Rock , moving cameras and all.

Blammo!” West Coast: Instead, Louis-Dreyfus says, “Hurry up, Aladdin, before Jasmine is forced to marry Jafar! Similarities ? Lemon out.” It gets way more applause. East Coast: Jane Krakowski sings the 30 Rock opening, which has lyrics questioning the wisdom of throwing a live show. West Coast: Cheyenne Jackson sings the 30 Rock opening, incorporating region-specific lines like “Let’s talk about sushi” and “Portland, Vegas, Glendale, this is 30 Rock !” East Coast: There’s a bad boom mic shadow at the end of the Rachel Dratch elevator scene. “Uh oh, now my shirt is accidentally falling off,” he said to audience cheers.

The 30 Rock cast gathered at the end for a big group hug and congratulations from their raving audience. They completely deserved it: this was a brilliant episode. East Coast: Jenna tells Pete about her song, “It’s Your Birthday, Slut.” West Coast: Whatever happened to Tracy Morgan in the last scene is catching, because Jane Krakowski forgets the “slut” part of her line briefly, but recovers. And when the “TGS” crew discussed how they could shorten the show and Scott Adsit’s Pete suggested cutting the Capital One product integration, Baldwin’s Jack launched into a Capital One plug. East Coast: According to online surveys, Jack “has a drinking problem.” West Coast: According to online surveys, Jack “is a problem drinker.” The difference is small but profound. “So I guess they’re geniuses for getting stuck in a mine!” Jenna snorted back. Apart from the odd fluffed line, the shows went without a hitch and were identical apart from a few pre-prepared differences.

Carl Chute wrote this piece – Celtic Rock – Combining the Old and the New - October 13, 2010 by jamesdean

If you are of Irish heritage, then you have probably heard of Celtic rock. This music combines elements from traditional Irish music, and modern-day rock music. Celtic rock has all of the old instruments; violins, mandolins, accordions, and many more. The difference between Celtic and traditional rock is that these instruments get combined with electric guitars, full drum kits, and large instrument amplifiers. Celtic rock typically has higher energy than its traditional counterpart. Let’s take a look at the history of the music and some of the dominant bands on the scene.

The style originated in Ireland in the early 70s. Around this time modern rock bands started to look to their traditional roots for new sound. Bands like Thin Lizzy would release modern covers of traditional songs, most notably “Whiskey in the Jar”. Other bands took a liking to this style, and progressed it themselves. Bands like the Horslips, Christy Moore, and Donald Lunny helped bring the music to mainstream popularity.

The 90s saw a new style of Celtic music emerge. At the time punk rock music was very popular in the US and the UK. So it seems natural that the Celtic sound would be combined with high aggression punk rock music. This style became extremely popular in North America and Europe. Bands like flogging Molly and the Dropkick Murphy’s started selling out stadiums all over the world. This new style was associated with the new youthful generation. Many traditional Irish music fans do not support Celtic punk rock.

In all its forms, Celtic rock has become a very popular genre. If you have not heard any, you are strongly encouraged to find some Celtic rock bands, and listen to their albums. It is a very distinct sound, that millions have grown to love.

Wednesday’s breaking news – Lennon’s New York Universe - October 8, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

As London, Liverpool and much of the world celebrates John Lennon’s 70th birthday today, New York marks its own claim on the former Beatle, who spent most of his final decade here before being gunned down in 1980. Events include a free public screening of “LENNONYC, ” a new documentary that traces his personal, political and artistic life in New York, including inside accounts of the recording of albums such as “Double Fantasy.” The film also delves into the FBI’s surveillance of the rocker and his immigration problems. (The Central Park screening will take place at Rumsey Playfield. About 100 people attended the dedication, which marks the start of a weekend of events in honor of Lennon’s birthday. The capsule is scheduled to be opened in 2040, on Lennon’s 100th birthday. But FBI scrutiny soured this bohemian idyll. The tower will remain lit until December 8, the anniversary of Lennon’s death. Two days later, Lennon was shot dead on the street in front of his apartment. Lennon, killed on his doorstep at 40, would have been 70 this Saturday, Oct. 9, when the New York Society for Ethical Culture will host an evening of his music with guests Pete Seeger, Marshall Crenshaw and three of the original Quarrymen. The activists often powwowed at the apartment—and consoled themselves there on the night of Richard Nixon’s 1972 re-election.

And on Nov. 22, PBS’ “American Masters” series will air a documentary called ” LennoNYC ,” taking a look at the last decade of Lennon’s life, living in New York with Ono. For Lennon, that included a reckless sexual encounter, with Yoko and friends mortified in the next room.

Proceeds from the show will benefit the Playing for Change Foundation, an organization whose mission is to promote peace and positive change. He describes his interview with the rock legend as a surreal experience. We know what happened to John and Paul and George, and eventually Ringo: they were the most loved, admired, innovative and attractive figures in the popular culture of their time. “There really wasn’t a model for a father who stayed home with his kids, for a father to be as involved in raising his family and making that a priority,” said Alan Light, a rock critic for Rolling Stone.

For Raiola, losing Lennon was very personal, and not just because he’s a fan of the Beatles and Lennon’s solo work.

But, later, he managed to turn his pain around to give the world many beautiful songs and important messages which changed our heads and the way of our lives. “There are a lot of Lennon connections that I have over the years, and when John died, on that tragic night, we took it very very bad. And I think I especially did not take that well.” Theatre Within’s first Lennon tribute came in 1981. She kisses his hand, demands a peck on her cheek, tells him moonily, “You’re my dreeeeam.” Julia also introduces him to American rock and rockabilly, less for the movie than as an emblem of her courtship. Mr. Douglas, the producer, recalls meeting Lennon and Ono there for breakfast during their “Double Fantasy” period. “You know what it means, rock ‘n’ roll?” she whispers warmly. “You couldn’t find anything to wear in there. Unless you were John Lennon,” Mr. Epstein says.

WOOT – “Rock The Fort” Draws Controversy - September 26, 2010 by jamesdean

“Rock The Fort” Draws Controversy

A concert scheduled at Fort Bragg Saturday may sound like a good way for soldiers to kick back, but a watchdog group is objecting to the message behind the music — calling it an attempt to recruit the troops into Christianity.

The Christian concert is called “Rock the Fort.” The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association is bringing Christian rock bands and worship to Fort Bragg – and some say, crossing a line.

Mikey Weinstein says more than 100 soldiers there have complained to his group, Military Religious Freedom.

Fort Bragg’s chaplain says the event on his base is open to the public. He says no one has to come – except the thousands of soldiers and their families who are excited to do so, saying it’s up to the individual and people like any message or any faith can choose to accept or reject.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State wrote the Secretary of the Army, urging him to stop the military’s endorsement of the event.

The chaplain says the base is merely a host, for anyone who wants to come.
