As the stars gear up for Sunday’s 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards, there’s one question looming: Will it be like 2009 (and 2008) all over again? We have the 2010 Emmys here, along with red carpet looks, nominees – with winners as they are named, and more! Sunday, August 29 at 8/7C, we are excited to bring you the 2010 Emmy live feed video! But downloading an episode of “Bachelor Pad” from Hulu onto your iPhone is a fairly dinky experience compared with watching “Avatar” in 3-D at an IMAX theater. “With the Emmys, it sometimes feels like you hit the rewind button when shows or actors keep getting awards for the same thing. Same can be said for Al Pacino ‘s Kevorkian in HBO’s flawed and quite boring You Don’t Know Jack .
Conan was nothing short of outstanding during his two turns hosting the Emmys, in 2002 and 2006 (he co-hosted in 2003), while Stewart has adeptly emceed both the Oscars and Grammys and when his first time hosting the latter ceremony didn’t start off so well, he characteristically acknowledged it, mocked it and moved on, to hilarious results. There’s a herd mentality that is tough to break.” Will this be the year that other shows finally break in? “With ‘Mad Men’ and ’30 Rock,’ they’re just consistently excellent shows,” said Susan Young, president of the Television Critics Assn. And when you count Sheen’s previous efforts in the same role, shouldn’t he get some major award love? People tune in, in large part, to see how the host fares and how he will differentiate the show from the previous year, regardless of the result: spectacular failure, with its palpable A-list-audience awkwardness, is often as entertaining as flawlessness. Award a Mad Man (or Woman): The show itself is drenched in awards show glory, and if Lost doesn’t sneak in on the “you finished strong” vote, the series will repeat as Best Drama. Awards shows need an anchor. Somehow, someone, somewhere thought that five offensively unfunny (yes, including Howie Mandel ) host/presenter types would equal one entertaining collective. But who and what is likely to win? For someone to steal it from ‘Mad Men,’ there has to be a special combination of buzz and strong content that voters like, and I think we’re seeing that this year.” The low-rated but critically lauded “30 Rock,” a satirical insider’s look at life within a TV variety show, finds itself in the midst of fellow critical darlings, some with larger audiences and even greater buzz. Cue the dead silence from the star-studded audience and the bewilderment of TV viewers. At least Letterman has been able to poke fun at the disaster ever since. But please let one of the actors from the best show currently on television make an acceptance speech.

Three first-season series nominees — Fox’s Glee , ABC’s Modern Family and CBS’ The Good Wife — have given a boost to broadcast television at the awards show, with 19, 14 and nine nominations respectively. Glee is the most-nominated series; Modern Family is No. 4, after AMC’s Mad Men (17) and NBC ‘s 30 Rock (15). Those plastic drums currently taking up real estate in your apartment could get some company soon. This holiday season, Harmonix and MTV Games will release the third installment in their Rock Band game series. This one, like previous entries, will include guitar, bass, vocals, and drums, but it’ll also feature keyboards and three-part harmonies, all for up to seven players simultaneously. There’s also the new Rock Band Pro Mode, which more accurately simulates what it’s like to actually play real instruments. Pretty soon, you’ll need an actual garage just to fit your video-game band.
The new Rock Band will feature 83 songs and access to a library of over 2,000 songs by the time the game launches, with new music regularly added. The new game’s tracklist includes classic-rock perennials like Jimi Hendrix, the Doors, and Night Ranger (“Sister Christian”, fuck yeah!) as well as more contemporary selections like Phoenix’s “Lasso”, the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven”, the White Stripes’ “The Hardest Button to Button”, Rilo Kiley’s “Portions for Foxes”, Metric’s “Combat Baby”, and Ida Maria’s “Oh My God”.

While composers like Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber still hold dominion over West End musicals in the public eye – particularly with televised cast auditions for shows like the Wizard of Oz providing a prime time advertising campaign for that traditional brand of musical – the more down-to-earth alternative of the classic rock opera is still a mainstay of the stage.
While it’s unlikely you’ll see rock operas attracting sell-out crowds at mainstream venues such as the London Palladium, this ever-popular brand of musical is still a firm favourite of audiences who know how to look beyond the glitz and find musicals that really rock. One place they can reliably turn is Broadway.
Indeed, all four ‘best musical’ nominees for this year’s Tony Awards, the prestigious accolade of American theatre, are fundamentally rock operas, though with varying degrees of integrity and acceptance by traditional rock fans. The Green Day inspired American Idiot and the Afrobeat of Fela! are up against Memphis and Million Dollar Quartet, both of which look back to the golden age of rock and roll. It’s a theatrical battle of the bands that is sending out a clear message to theatre-goers and producers alike – the rock musical is far from dead.
While rock musicals have often faced criticism for failing to live up to the ideal of a traditional rock concert, the best don’t simply aim to transfer the live music experience to the stage, but will involve an intriguing and electrifying plot that captures the spirit and attitude conveyed by the music, though this can be a challenge to pull off expertly.
Some overcome these teething problems by seeking creative ways to break down the barriers of the accepted musical form. One case in point is the classic rock opera Hair, now enjoying a new lease of life at London’s Gielgud Theatre, which involves the audience directly and still has much of the anarchic energy that made it such a controversial hit during its original run.
Others are less successful in making the transition from best-selling album to stage, something that is arguably the case with American Idiot, which Green Day fans have argued was already ‘complete’ in its original CD form. By weaving a story through songs and lyrics, songwriters don’t even require a stage to tell their musical stories, but can let it play out in the minds of their fans.
This may be one reason why so many fans of musicals seek to relive their audience experience soon after attending shows with the help of online music streaming, and it is the mark of an effective musical that the songs remain fresh and engaging even when the choreography and costumes are stripped away.
Kid Rock Keeps It “Real” at CMT Music Awards
Yes, he smoked. Yes, he made some snide remarks that might’ve been a little inappropriate for a family show. Kid Rock did all those bad-boy things right. But here is why he was the perfect host for the CMT Music Awards. During his 10-second speech at the very end, he said this: “As a music lover, if it looks good you’ll see it. If it sounds good, you’ll hear it. If it’s marketed right, you’ll buy it. But if it’s real, you’ll feel it.” I don’t know if the show’s writers wrote that for him or if he came up with it on his own, but it felt genuine to me. And that’s the power of music and of Kid Rock. He may not be the countriest guy out there, and he wasn’t an obvious choice as host. But you can tell that to him, music is all that matters. And to me, that matters.

Host Kid Rock Has a Leg Up on Carrie Underwood
Kid Rock loves the whole country music scene. And really, who doesn’t? There’s a lot to love, whether you like old-school country, Southern rock, pop country or bluegrass. But Rock admits that he was a little skeptical when he was asked to host tomorrow night’s (June 9) 2010 CMT Music Awards, because he’s nervous about being on live TV. “I was really unsure if I could pull off carrying the show, or if I was going to look like an idiot. But I said, ‘What the hell?’” He told Us Weekly that he’s most looking forward to Carrie Underwood: “Every performance of her is like, ‘Check out my legs!’ I’m like, ‘I know! They’re awesome! I get it!’” The country rocker recently announced he’ll be hanging in Nashville for a few extra days since he’ll be playing the LP Field Concert Stage on Friday night (June 11) during the CMA Music Festival.
