Startling mgm story: Movie studio MGM emerges from bankruptcy - December 21, 2010 by jamesdean

It looks like MGM is ready to start the new year with a clean slate and $500 million worth of capital to play with. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. , distributor of the James Bond and Rocky movies, emerged from a streamlined bankruptcy and raised $500 million to produce new films and television series. The studio known for its roaring lion and classics such as “The Wizard of Oz” said its restructuring plan took effect on Monday after a bankruptcy court approved the plan earlier this month. Creditors owed about $5 billion, including Highland Capital Management, Anchorage Advisors and billionaire Carl Icahn, exchanged their debt for ownership stakes. The new equity holders in the studio include billionaire Carl Icahn , who will designate one of the company’s nine directors. MGM is emerging from one of the most challenging periods of its storied history. Hit the jump to see what other films MGM plans on cranking out over the next few years. The Bond revamp has proven successful in the past, so it’s a safe bet that the 23rd installment will be greenlit.

My Two Cents: Larry Says Goodbye: as I saw this I started to feel desperate - December 20, 2010 by jamesdean

image

Last week, the nonpareil Larry King signed off his CNN interview show after 25 years. In tribute, here is an unworthy homage to Mr. King’s late, beloved USA Today column. Veteran interviewer Larry King bowed out with a ratings bang after 25 years on air as more than 2.2m viewers tuned in to his final show. Thomson Reuters is the world’s largest international multimedia news agency, providing investing news, world news, business news, technology news, headline news, small business news, news alerts, personal finance, stock market, and mutual funds information available on Reuters.com, video, mobile, and interactive television platforms. When Larry King closed out his 25-year run as host of his CNN talk show last week, it marked the end of yet another era. Wolfson paid King $48,000, for Larry to testify for  Wolfson, to U.S. Attorney General John Mitchell. Once the dominant voice in cable television news, King has faded in a sea of sharp talkers. After taking various jobs, which included a position as the public relations director for a Louisiana racetrack and writing several Esquire Magazine articles, King was eventually re-hired at WIOD and went national in 1978. But he must also get a cat. He asked his share of dumb questions over the years but never had an axe to grind.

He’s talked of doing comedy, or going back to some radio work. Lives can turn around but you never know what is in somebody else’s closet. King enjoyed the company of celebrities because he let them talk. Someone called his forum “America’s confessional” and that’s not far from the truth. Yes, please…I’ve spent a weekend in a Slanket, I’m not ashamed…I don’t want a magazine to tell me what to eat…Let’s not pretend that Pop Warner games are exciting…Why did the Vikings fire that pleasant hairless coach? I guess I can say now that I turned down Leslie Nielsen’s part in “Airplane.” I also have never hosted a clambake, seen an owl or said the word “arcane” out loud…They can never make enough Karate Kids…I truly enjoy double parking….Have zero problem with a World Cup in Qatar. His overnight show on the Mutual Network in the 1980s was one of the medium’s most entertaining shows of its time. “But for generations of Americans, the answers to these questions have surprised us, they’ve informed us, and they’ve opened our eyes to the world beyond our living rooms.” California Gov. King has conducted some 50,000 interviews in a broadcasting career where he worked for decades in radio before joining CNN in 1985. He’s recorded more than 6,000 shows for CNN.

Just asking people why they were up all night could prove interesting. The TV show, while more compact and glitzier than the radio version, was always about the latest thing. Some critics said he often seemed ill–prepared and tossed softballs, while King described his style as “minimalist,” with the goal of getting his guests to talk. Or was it cook for the Raiders?

It was very late…Dear Derek Jeter: Not even Frank Sinatra got to write the last lyric…Don’t worry, I’ll be back and bigger than ever, just like George Foreman and “Tron.” —See Jason Gay’s daily Greater New York sports columns at WSJ.com/NYSPORTS .

On the Air: CNN has big pair of suspenders to fill - December 19, 2010 by jamesdean

image

When Larry King closed out his 25-year run as host of his CNN talk show last week, it marked the end of yet another era. The 77-year-old had moved from mere interviewer to icon some time ago. Thomson Reuters is the world’s largest international multimedia news agency, providing investing news, world news, business news, technology news, headline news, small business news, news alerts, personal finance, stock market, and mutual funds information available on Reuters.com, video, mobile, and interactive television platforms. Larry was all business with the gruff voice and deadpan approach. Even as his body seems to shrivel and his concentration appears to wane, he’s been showing up for “Larry King Live,” his five-nights-a-week, hourlong CNN interview program, for 25 years. One of the things that set King apart and provided him extended video life was that old-school lack of charm. Throughout it all — and, indeed, throughout his whole career, which began in radio in 1957 — his off-the-cuff, agenda-free (unprepared?) style has proved both amusing and bemusing to heads of state and reality show stars alike. During his 25-year tenure of CNN’s 9pm slot , he interviewed thousands of high-profile names and was popular within the celebrity circuit for allowing his guests to promote their cause while being sure there would be no awkward questions.

King had been averaging 672,000 viewers a night this year, typically third in his time slot behind Hannity and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow – and sometimes even fourth behind HLN’s Joy Behar. His critics say it’s “softball.” His fans, including many who have appeared on his show, say it’s “fairball.” I say it’s both. King enjoyed the company of celebrities because he let them talk. I’ve known Larry since 1957, when he was a fledgling disc jockey on radio station WAHR in Miami.

On his final show, King struggled to hold back tears as he signed off with: “Instead of goodbye, how about so long?” Britain’s own Piers Morgan has been chosen to replace King and will be taking over in January. King’s observation in The New York Times that “the hosts of all these other shows are interviewing themselves” is popping up all over the blogosphere, as are comments from King’s colleagues and former interviewees who are happy to turn on the spigot of “they don’t make ‘em like they use to” — style praise. He left the job after only a year to become editor of the Daily Mirror, a job he held until 2004 when he resigned after a row over the publication of British soldiers seemingly abusing Iraqis; the pictures were revealed to be fake. King’s response was “Who?,” feigning ignorance about this new breed of radio talk show where one person pontificates. Bush called him a “thoroughgoing professional.” Fox News ‘ Greta Van Susteren lauded him for making his guests feel comfortable. My dad died when I was 2. King’s schtick was always about the guests – and they didn’t have to be megastars to be interesting. King’s radio show allowed a guest more time.

He gambled on a late-night radio talk show. During his time out of the limelight, he wrote a best-selling book – The Insider – a gossipy and amusing read of his time mixing with celebrities and editors, and set about reinventing himself, particularly in the US. Through his friend Simon Cowell, he raised his profile in the US with a role as a judge on America’s Got Talent before taking on the same job on Britain’s Got Talent . It’s a different medium,” King said. Radio also allowed King more interaction with the public beyond the terse, “Portland, you’re on with …,” and gave the host a chance to tell stories, something you missed on the TV side.

Jonathan Storm: Larry King is a genuine giant, but he got a phony send-off (we don’t read this all the time) - December 18, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

Has there been a worse finale for a long-running show? Jerry Seinfeld had a bit of run-in in 2007 with King, who, as usual, had done no homework and assumed the classic comedy had been canceled by NBC. Thomson Reuters is the world’s largest international multimedia news agency, providing investing news, world news, business news, technology news, headline news, small business news, news alerts, personal finance, stock market, and mutual funds information available on Reuters.com, video, mobile, and interactive television platforms. For his last night on CNN, it felt like all the suspender-clad host’s high-profile friends called in to say good-bye. There was more fake emotion Thursday night in the supposed celebration of King’s historic show than there had been perhaps in the previous 251/2 years. If the folks at CNN thought of rounding up the stellar talents of Bill Maher and Ryan Seacrest to assist the legendary interviewer, it’s no wonder the network is in free fall toward the bottom of the cable news barrel.

The show hit its high point when the fake fawning dropped off, and Larry was allowed to be Larry. Despite the ridiculous time-delayed connection to Bill Clinton in Hope, Ark., real information and important opinion emerged from a typical off-the-cuff King question, this one about the current tax bill compromise. The Nielsen Co. said Friday that an estimated 2.24 million people watched the last episode of “Larry King Live.” He beat the usual leader in cable news during that time slot, Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity, who had 2.16 million viewers. “But for generations of Americans, the answers to these questions have surprised us, they’ve informed us, and they’ve opened our eyes to the world beyond our living rooms.” But not everyone was sad to see him go: “What a slobber-fest! Save me from b.s. for a man who rarely asked a hard question in his career,” wrote Deadline’s Nikki Finke . It was an audition of sorts for the woman whose talents, if not ambition, have been wasted as anchor of the CBS Evening News , and whose contract is coming up soon amid a lot of speculation that she will move back, with some sort of talk show, to the softer side of contemporary events that has always been her strong suit. “I’m glad you clarified that!” Clinton said to King. His skills have not carried him through into the modern age of shouting news bullies, and he probably should have gotten out a few years ago. Maybe CNN then would have done a better job with the send-off.

Learn even more on the dodgy subject of king here – “Larry King Live” draws 2.2 million for last show - December 18, 2010 by jamesdean

Thomson Reuters is the world’s largest international multimedia news agency, providing investing news, world news, business news, technology news, headline news, small business news, news alerts, personal finance, stock market, and mutual funds information available on Reuters.com, video, mobile, and interactive television platforms. The final Larry King Live telecast on CNN saw a nice bounce, up more than 100% from the night before to 2.25 million viewers and 530,000 viewers in the adults 25-54 demographic.  King bettered Hanity on Fox News in total viewers (2.24m vs. 2.16m) but Hannity won out with adults 25-54 (543,000 vs. 530,000). Ann O. is at home wrapping presents, so Arienne Thompson is filling in for the day. … And Larry King  got a royal send off Thursday evening first on the air, where his final CNN show was filled with friends like Regis Philbin and  Donald Trump , celebrities, U.S. presidents and network news anchors; and then at Spago in Beverly Hills where the cream of his generation rose to the occasion, packing Wolfgang Puck ‘s spacious restaurant, to toast not only the end of the Larry King Live  program after a quarter century run, but also the end of an era in the rapidly evolving world of broadcast news. “This is the end of a show, not the end of a man,” declared Bill Maher , who along with Ryan Seacrest  kept Larry company throughout the final one hour show. British talk-show host and “America’s Got Talent” judge Piers Morgan takes over the 9 p.m. But it was more than the end of a show; it was the end of an era. Arnold Schwarzenegger thanked him for moving his show to L.A., officially declaring December 16 “Larry King Day” in California. The Nielsen Co. said Friday that an estimated 2.24 million people watched the last episode of “Larry King Live.” He beat the usual leader in cable news during that time slot, Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity, who had 2.16 million viewers. Jess probably could care less since ” this is the happiest she’s ever been ,” according to dad Joe Simpson . “But for generations of Americans, the answers to these questions have surprised us, they’ve informed us, and they’ve opened our eyes to the world beyond our living rooms.” But not everyone was sad to see him go: “What a slobber-fest! Splitsville in Hollywood as stars part for the holidays Seeing this made me feel somber - December 15, 2010 by jamesdean

photo

Los Angeles – The world’s sexiest man is to get divorced from the sexiest woman alive as a wave of breakups hits the rarefied air of Hollywood glamour couples. Ryan Reynolds, 32, who just last month was named as People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, is getting divorced from the equally divine Scarlett Johansson, the 26-year-old actress who was named the sexiest woman alive in 2006. It’s been a bad week for celebrity relationships. Splitting spouses Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson won’t be spending the holidays with one another but that doesn’t mean they’ll be alone.

Thomson Reuters is the world’s largest international multimedia news agency, providing investing news, world news, business news, technology news, headline news, small business news, news alerts, personal finance, stock market, and mutual funds information available on Reuters.com, video, mobile, and interactive television platforms.

While the two had remained relatively private about their relationship, which began in 2007, they always had the kindest things to say about their marriage and each other. Reynolds, 34, who stars in the upcoming “Green Lantern,” told GQ in October that things had “changed” since he married his movie-starlet wife, 26. “I’m a little more guarded, I think. On Monday, Dexter star Michael C Hall and his wife, Jennifer Carpenter, announced their break up after two years of marriage. “It was my mission to have a moment of privacy, to do something for myself,” Johansson told the Los Angeles Times about the wedding, which took place in Canada. “We entered our relationship with love and kindness, and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. “I was happy with the results of that.” ( See photos of Ryan and Scarlett in happier times .) She opened up about her decision to marry in Glamour last year, saying, “I never really thought about getting married — it just kind of happened. Now, the Track saw this split coming even before the Hollywood It Couple tied the knot. It was kind of a celebration of the time.” The actress and sometime singer expressed her happiness about having that special someone in her life. “There’s a nice comfort in that,” she said.

Stop.” He kept switching directions on the sidewalk, trying to get away from his galpal. They were married five months later. You’ve got your home in that other person.” Reynolds expressed a similar sentiment to People when he was declared the Sexiest Man Alive. Just as shocking to seasoned celebrity watchers was the split of Hollywood’s most glamorous younger couple.

Wednesdays scandal – Mark Zuckerberg - December 15, 2010 by jamesdean

photo

On the afternoon of Nov. 16, 2010, Mark Zuckerberg was leading a meeting in the Aquarium, one of Facebook’s conference rooms, so named because it’s in the middle of a huge work space and has glass walls on three sides so everybody can see in. Conference rooms are a big deal at Facebook because they’re the only places anybody has any privacy at all, even the bare minimum of privacy the Aquarium gets you. Thomson Reuters is the world’s largest international multimedia news agency, providing investing news, world news, business news, technology news, headline news, small business news, news alerts, personal finance, stock market, and mutual funds information available on Reuters.com, video, mobile, and interactive television platforms. And maybe you’ve seen the acclaimed movie “The Social Network,” which portrays Zuckerberg as socially stunted, calculating and arrogant. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange earlier won a Time readers’ poll on 2010′s most influential person. Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO and co-founder and presiding visionary, doesn’t have an office. He’s very quick-witted.” His reaction to being named? The good news is, their friends all live there too.

: Jake Gyllenhaal Feels ‘Comfortable’ About His Body - December 13, 2010 by jamesdean

photo

Here at Entertainmentwise, we’re a bit partial to a bit of Jake Gyllenhall, especially when he’s hardly got any clothes on… a la Love and Other Drugs . So, when we heard that the actor, who is reportedly dating Taylor Swift said that he’s “comfortable” with his body, we couldn’t help but vigorously nod our heads in agreement. So far some of the cities they have been seen in together include Nashville and Manhattan, but now they are in California and don’t seem to mind the attention at all. When the two were together recently driving around Los Angeles, they reportedly had a scary encounter with the paparazzi, states Gossip Cop . “it’s uncomfortable when you’re naked on set, but I do feel like an old hand at it at this point. I’ve done some pretty crazy things already.

One source from a gossip magazine reported that it seems as though Paltrow played some type of role in their getting together. She loves how nice and affectionate he is,” a source recently told Us Weekly of the couple, who’ve now been dating for about six weeks. Hollywood News, Hollywood Awards, Awards, Movies, News, Award News, Breaking News, Entertainment News, Movie News, Music News Image by PR Photos. It seems Paltrow has a connection to both young stars; Swift with her country music, and Jake with his acting. Besides, in our case, we’d already had faux movie sex in Brokeback Mountain . So we were relatively comfortable.” Jake is one fine specimen of a man!

Wednesday’s madness: Lennon: ‘I have plenty of time’ - December 9, 2010 by jamesdean

photo

In the interview, conducted three days before the former Beatle was fatally shot in New York and published in Rolling Stone magazine, Lennon says critics turn artists into deities, but “I cannot live up to other people’s expectations of me, because they’re illusory.” “I’m not claiming divinity. I’ve never claimed purity of soul. Decades after his passing, John Lennon remains one of the most influential artists in pop music, with the Beatles catalog getting snapped up on iTunes and fans as protective of his legacy as ever .

It was 30 years ago today.

I’ve never claimed to have the answers to life. On the 30th anniversary of his death Wednesday (December 8), fans participated in Lennon tributes across the globe — including a diverse lineup of Lennon’s high-profile acolytes and members of his family who shared their thoughts about the game-changing activist and musician. A crazed man took Lennon’s life, but millions of his fans kept his memory alive all these years later. “Dad was completely happy to run the risk of not being understood,” he said. “I was watching Monday Night Football, and Eyewitness News, the local news, broke in to say that a man identified as John Lennon had been shot outside the Dakota,” Connelly said. As one group left, another quickly replaced it. John and Yoko had just returned from a studio session. “How his voice cut through all the nonsense and sent a message to me that said, ‘If I can do it then so can you, so get up off your backside and play some rock ‘n’ roll,’ as if to throw down a musical gauntlet.” In her own tribute to Lennon, Ono blogged about an intimate moment she and her husband shared laughing about the fact that he had been preparing their tea incorrectly for years. “On this day, the day he was assassinated for being a truth seeker and a communicator, what I remember is the night we both cracked up drinking tea,” she wrote on her website, ImaginePeace.com .”They say teenagers laugh with a drop of a hat. “My job was to buzz people in as they came in in the morning, and the looks on their faces were unforgettable. A man handed out fliers claiming Chapman was a CIA agent. It was not just that he was a Beatle, it was not just that he had done a decade’s worth of amazing solo work. … Across the street at the entrance to Strawberry Fields, vendors sold Lennon and Beatles photos.

Let’s all just pray for peace on earth,” he wrote.

Although several hands held guitars or flowers, most held cameras. “She’s got a ticket to ride, she’s got a ticket to ride, but she don’t care,” came from one end. Lots of people will tell you they heard the news that day, oh boy, from Howard Cosell as they watched “Monday Night Football.” Not me. I was sitting on a couch in a rented apartment in Warwick, N.Y. “The most important gift we received from him was not words, but deeds. That’s John Lennon’s legacy.” And if you want to listen to some of Lennon’s work today, Connelly offered some recommendations. Steve Sassano sat on a park bench near the crowd, taking in the melodies with a smile on his face. We hope you’ll watch today’s Conversation for more.

He couldn’t have been in any other way,” she wrote. It would be a good career taking me around the world on assignments, writing and editing for publications like the New York Post, the Dallas Morning News (where my newsroom window overlooked another one of those famous “where were you when you heard” sites), and ESPN Magazine. John Lennon was gunned down outside of the building on December 8, 1980. He knows some of the same American songs as John, even knows the lyrics and writes some of them down. Then 40, Lennon says he “cannot be 18 and a be a punk. . . . I see the world through different eyes.” However, “I still believe in love, peace and understanding, as Elvis Costello says.” Lennon worries about Bruce Springsteen, then hailed as rock’s bright future: “And God help Bruce Springsteen when they decide he’s no longer God. . . .

troops has captured our attention – Paramore Get Troops Rockin’ And Reflecting At ‘VH1 Divas’ - December 5, 2010 by jamesdean

image

It seemed the troops were just as ready to rock out as Williams and co. were, as they quickly turned into a sea of signs of the horn and crowd-surfers. (Click here to see photos from “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” .) Amid the flashing lights, both onstage and coming from the countless cameras flashing from the crowd (many of whom held glow sticks too), Williams belted out Dave Grohl’s catchy chorus, “There goes my hero/ Watch him as he goes/ There goes my hero/ He’s ordinary.” Paramore, who have previously covered “My Hero” (from the Foo’s defining 1998 record The Colour and the Shape ) on the compilation album Sound of Superman, didn’t miss a beat during their stint on Sunday’s show. Williams and her bandmates then took a breaking from rocking and slowed things down a bit with their love song “The Only Exception.” The audience showed their appreciation for the band with waving hands and lighters. The band provided one of the evening’s few subdued numbers of the night, and the swaying crowd (many of whom sung along with the chorus, “But you are the only exception “) gave the show a much-needed moment of reflection. Viewers can watch the concert when it airs Sunday night. The service members attending the “VH1 Divas Salute the Troops” weren’t the first to take Williams’ ballad to heart this year.

Perry even made one entrance suspended from a stars-and-stripes parachute. Hollywood News, Hollywood Awards, Awards, Movies, News, Award News, Breaking News, Entertainment News, Movie News, Music News Image by PR Photos.

He said, ‘Yes, ma’am’ to me. Yes, sir!’” A VH1 publicist estimated an audience of 27,000 attended the nearly three-hour taping of the concert Friday night at the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar. The show, which airs Sunday night, features a bounty of what the network has dubbed “divas” — female or female-lead musical acts, including established stars such as Heart, Paramore and Sugarland, as well as hot newcomers Grace Potter and The Nocturnals, Keri Hilson and Nicki Minaj. “So, I had to be very difficult today, and late,” she continued, adding that she was really neither.

Perry went on to reference Beyonce’s song “Diva,” then proceeded to lose the lyric. “She is the true diva.” Onstage, Perry pulled out the stops — and the costumes — with the opening number featuring Perry, Hilson and Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles in WAC uniforms for a cover of The Andrews Sisters’ ’40s classic “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.” Perry closed the show with her current smash “Firework,” which concluded, appropriately, with a fireworks display. The tune was also featured in the wildly popular Britney Spears episode of “Glee,” in which Lea Michele echoed Williams sentiment that, “That was the day that I promised/ I’d never sing of love if it does not exist.” What did you think of Paramore’s performances of “My Hero” and “The Only Exception”? Taylor Swift Named Entertainment Weekly’s Entertainer of the Year - December 2, 2010 by jamesdean

photo

Well, they’ve all made Entertainment Weekly ‘s Entertainers of the Year list , along with 10 other celebrities. But, the magazine has singled out Swift for its top prize, Entertainer of the Year. Taylor Swift slips into a tux and throw on a top hat on the latest cover of Entertainment Weekly , on stands today. “Sometimes I would laugh because I would see it in print and it would say, ‘This song, which is written about her ex, so-and-so …’ And they would write about it as if it was fact,” she says. The 20-year-old country chanteuse is the youngest  person to win the honor since it launched in 1990. Taylor , who is currently dating Jake Gyllenhaal , opens up about the speculation that her ex-boyfriends are the subjects of the songs on her album Speak Now ( Taylor Lautner , Joe Jonas , John Mayer ). She shares, “Sometimes I would laugh because I would see it in print and it would say, ‘This song, which is written about her ex, so-and-so…’ And they would write about it as if it was fact. In the accompanying interview, Swift discusses her well-documented penchant for chronicling her love life in song, noting that the public speculation about which tune is about which ex-boyfriend is often off-target: “Sometimes I would laugh because I would see it in print and it would say, ‘This song, which is written about her ex, so-and-so…’ And they would write about it as if it was fact. Hollywood News, Hollywood Awards, Awards, Movies, News, Award News, Breaking News, Entertainment News, Movie News, Music News Image courtesy of Splash News. Did Swift really best all of them? Or even go,” she admits. “Then I woke up in the middle of the night and I realized that I had to, and that I wanted to perform that song.” Is Taylor Swift your Entertainer of the Year?

‘Early Show’ anchors are out as CBS shuffles its morning lineup (seriously I thought this was over by now) - December 1, 2010 by jamesdean

image

Gone, as of Jan. 3, will be anchors Harry Smith and Maggie Rodriguez and weatherman Dave Price. In one of those incredible coincidences that make covering TV so paranormal, Hill and Wragge have been co-anchoring the Saturday edition of “The Early Show” since 2008.

Glor has anchored the Saturday edition of the “CBS Evening News” since last year. The appointment is effective Jan. 3, 2011. And Castro was weather and feature correspondent for ABC News’s weekend edition of “Good Morning America” from 2004 until this year. When Chen became den mother of “The Talk,” which premiered in October, she said she would mostly work as a “consultant” for “The Early Show,” doing taped pieces. Jeff Glor , who has anchored the Saturday edition of the CBS Evening News since 2009, becomes the news anchor, replacing Hill. “We’ll be doing that a little bit more and covering big stories like the changes in Washington in the coming New Year.” Hill said she “was a little shocked at first” to hear she’d been named the show’s new co-anchor. The changes follow a season in which, from September 2009 to September 2010, “The Early Show” lured an average daily audience of around 2.5 million viewers its lowest average viewership since the 2000-2001 season. “They don’t expect us to come in there on Week 2 and all of the sudden blow everyone out of the water,” she said. CBS’ morning news shows have been Nielsen disasters since the network began airing them in the 1950s. Last season (Sept. 2009-Sept. 2010) marked the show’s lowest average audience since the 2000-01 season averaging 2.5 million viewers. “Obviously if things were quote unquote working we wouldn’t make changes,” said Friedman, adding that when he arrived at the program he “looked at many different aspects of the show and tried to figure out what needed to be changed.” “Everything was considered,” he said. In February 2010, Castro reported on the orphan crisis following the Haitian earthquake. We’ve not been able to succeed in programming from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

“It’s about finding the right team.” While The Today Show averages about 5.6 million viewers daily and Good Morning America 4.6 million, The Early Show lags far behind with 2.9 million. Prior to that, she worked as an anchor and correspondent for News 12 The Bronx (2000-2002). Online Only Access – 26 Weeks: $50.00 for 182 days. That being said, we obviously want to see our ratings grow. For assistance please call 410-398-3311. I’ll be watching another network in the AM . JILL CLAYBURGH , the sophisticated Hollywood and Broadway actress known for portrayals of empowered women in a career spanning five decades, has died. Anderson had been placed in hospice care at his home because of complications of dementia, his family said in a statement Wednesday. Oscar-nominated actress Jill Clayburgh passed away late Friday due to complications from chronic leukemia, which she had lived with for twenty-one years. In 1975, Clayburgh had some profile, but at 32, hadn’t broken through. Jill Clayburgh died with leukaemia, the actress suffering from this disease since 21-years. SHIRLEY VERRETT, the vocally lustrous and dramatically compelling American opera singer, died Friday morning at her home in Ann Arbor, Mich. She began as a mezzo-soprano and went on to sing soprano roles to international acclaim. Besides appearing in such movies as “I’m Dancing As Fast As I Can,” “Silver Streak” and “Running With Scissors,” Clayburgh’s Broadway credits included Noel Coward’s “Design for Living,” the original production of Tom Stoppard’s “Jumpers,” and the Tony Award-winning musicals “Pippin” and “The Rothschilds.” Clayburgh’s work also stretched across TV. His nationally syndicated column ran from 1954 until his retirement in 1998.

Clayburgh played a very different kind of woman on the verge. That ultimately led her to hone her skills in the extremely intense theater program at Northwestern. Instead, as she said in interviews, she asserted herself with willful and destructive behavior so much so that her parents took her to a psychiatrist when she was 9. Starting Over was released October 5th, 1979 . These triumphs led, as they often do, to high profile misses. Our thoughts to go out ot Lily and the rest of her family at this time. Director Doug Hughes, who directed her in a production of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” at the Westport Country Playhouse in 2003, called her for “Naked Girl.” “That she has the time to do a run of a play is just an extraordinary boon because I’ve had the pleasure of seeing her play a bona fide tragic American role beautifully, and I have had the pleasure of directing her in a very, very smart light comedy and be utterly brilliant in that,” he said in 2005. Blanchard, who friends called “Sweets” because of her kindness, died at Bruyn Hospital, where she had lived in the geriatric ward since 1980, said hospital director Pierre Nuty. Blanchard was born in St. Barts on Feb. 16, 1896.

Media Decoder: Cablevision Steers Customers Online (I’ve gotten pretty used to seeing things like this) - October 27, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

The dispute between Cablevision and Fox, a unit of News Corporation, over retransmission fees has dragged on for eleven days. If a customer signs up for a live Web stream of World Series, Cablevision will refund the cost of the sign-up. MLB.com is live-streaming the World Series for $9.95.

In an e-mail message to customers Wednesday evening, Cablevision said it would credit customers’ accounts $10.00 if they provide proof of purchase. Barnes & Noble is taking orders now. News Corporation filed a cease and desist letter in that case. Fox refused the offer, saying Cablevision is seeking a “discounted ‘package rate’ without buying the entire package,” according to a Fox e-mailed statement.Editors: Steve Geimann, Larry Liebert. “This solution is in the best interest of not only baseball fans but of all Cablevision customers and Fox viewers.” News Corp. said it remains committed to negotiating a fair deal, but Cablevision’s “incomplete proposal is not acceptable.” The media giant added that “Cablevision is seeking a discounted ‘package rate’ without buying the entire package.” News Corp. said it is willing to negotiate a deal “based on an entire suite of channels” under the terms it reached with Time Warner Cable and other providers, or a stand-alone agreement for three local broadcast Fox affiliates. Fox News is unaffected because it is part of a separate contract. “It is now clear beyond a shadow of a doubt that News Corp. is operating in bad faith,” Cablevision spokesman Charles Schueler said. The company says you can go from finding a book to reading it in under 12 seconds. Meanwhile, some Cablevision customers who did not or could not set up an antenna to watch the first game of the World Series vented their frustration online Wednesday night, blaming both sides for the blackout. After reading about the start of the game, the Twitter user LauraBusta wrote, “I’m really upset that I didn’t see this.” A user with the handle xBBx wrote, “Time for some World Series Baseball!

‘Event,’ ‘LOLA,’ ‘Outsourced’ land full seasons: I suddenly feel disheartened - October 19, 2010 by jamesdean

Thomson Reuters is the world’s largest international multimedia news agency, providing investing news, world news, business news, technology news, headline news, small business news, news alerts, personal finance, stock market, and mutual funds information available on Reuters.com, video, mobile, and interactive television platforms. The three newbies are due to complete their first season for they have received a full-season order while ‘Chuck’ is on the verge of being renewed itself. “We are pleased with the quality of ‘The Event,’ ‘Law & Order: Los Angeles’ and ‘Outsourced,’ and feel they are an important part of helping to rebuild our schedule and our studio pipeline,” Angela Bromstad, NBC’s entertainment president, said in a statement.

What’s more, given the lack of big hits on the network’s schedule, NBC really didn’t have much choice but to keep some of its freshmen in production. Similarly “The Event” has also grown fan base over the weeks while “Outsourced” is popular among advertiser-favored young adult viewers. Oh look he acts like a kid… oh looks its Elaine… Chris Parnell’s fake commercial was the best part; and yet he is so so much funnier on Archer that is quite sad watching that. The real crime is that Community did not get its back order. In Good News, it seems Chuck is on the verge of a full pickup. More music : TV One’s new reality series, ” K-Ci and JoJo . . . Likewise, industry insiders believe CBS is almost certain to green-light more episodes of all of its first-year shows before the end of the month. Thursday slot within the next few days.

Kim Kardashian turns 30 in Las Vegas with Khloe, Kourtney and friends - October 16, 2010 by jamesdean

And then the other half of me is like, I feel so accomplished, and it’s really no different than 29.” Jenner took the opportunity to remind Kim that she’d had four children by the age of 30, and if Kim happens “to find a husband and have 1,000 kids, I’d really be happy.”  Kardashian celebrated until 2 a.m. at Tao, where Rowland took the mic and serenaded her friend with her single “When Love Takes Over.” Sound like a day to remember? Kim kicked off festivities in the private dining room at TAO, dining with a large group of friends and family including mom Kris, siblings Khloe, Kourtney and Rob, “Spin Crowd” star Jonathan Cheban, Kelly Rowland and more.

Kim admits that she is still a little freaked out about the big birthday: “Sometimes I’m like, ‘Oh my god, I’m turning 30,’” reports People . While at times she thinks it sounds totally old, another part of her is beginning to come to terms with the age. “I feel so accomplished and it’s really no different than 29,” Kim says about how proud she is of what she has done at such a young age. Hmmm who can I drunk dial tonight?” Fans gathered below the famous family, snapping pictures and cheering for the birthday girl as she took over the mic to greet partygoers. So for now, she will gladly celebrate the big birthday in Las Vegas the rest of the weekend.

Kardashian, who doesn’t drink that often, indulged in some alcohol to celebrate entering her 30s. Kim deemed the party a success, Tweeting, “I love u @TaoLasVegas!!! rescue is the focus: After miners’ successful rescue, focus shifts to safety, newfound fame - October 14, 2010 by jamesdean

image

Share this story with CNN. Go to iReport and post your viewing experiences on video. After 69 days and a cost as high as $20 million, 33 miners are finally freed from a mine in northern Chile. On the Web for the past 40 hours, we have all been Chilean. CNN’s standard primetime lineup regularly struggles to attract anywhere near as many viewers as Fox News Channel and MSNBC, who have won the evening with their more fiery and opinionated news coverage. ET on Tuesday, online news traffic grew to more than 4 million page views per minute, making the miners’ rescue the fifth most-read-about online event since Akamai’s Net Usage Index for News debuted in 2005. As of Oct. 12, 2010, TV and Web converged to tell a story of success, unity and jubilation. CNN.com began live-streaming the long-awaited rescues Tuesday evening and planned to continue until the rescue was over — the longest live-streamed news event ever on its site. Fox News did best with more than 3.2 million and 736,000, respectively. It led most major news sites here and abroad, elbowing out glum tidings of economic slump and vicious politics. Fox News Channel ran continuous split screen coverage with live cut-ins from Shephard Smith until 10 p.m. You didn’t turn off the light.” But the situation wasn’t entirely light-hearted. The televised image is no longer stationary: It flows through the walking, moving social world. Indoors, thousands stole time from work to watch on their desk computers.

“This is what I want.” As worldwide exultation over the rescue begins to settle, more daunting tasks loom understanding why the mine collapsed on August 5, and making sure such an incident doesn’t happen again. What’s more, many of them, thousands and thousands, posted, blogged, and tweeted about it. ABC’s “Nightline” will also focus on the rescue. They turned spectatorship into social discourse, and rarely has such discourse been so joyful. The online photo-sharing site Flickr highlighted images from the event. Meanwhile, Spanish-language Univision also reported ratings gains for Tuesday night thanks to its mine rescue coverage, but focused on slightly different figures. Dozens of Facebook pages were dedicated to the miners. Pinera put the price of the rescue mission at $10 million to $20 million. Messages include: “From Costa Rica, our heart is with you” and “From Japan: Chile and the world united for the miners!” and “With this story of hope, we are all family; nationality doesn’t matter.” And, in a sign of these communication times, Facebook posters often mentioned they were watching on another medium: CNN, BBC, Sky News. Some, he said, may be able to leave the hospital Thursday afternoon. CNN’s breaking news blog, This Just In , saw its biggest traffic day ever on Wednesday in part because of the rescue, Martin said. Wednesday on Twitter, the “trending topics” (most popular topics for messages) were Chilean miners , rescue , Alex Vega (one of the rescued miners), cápsula , and so on.

“The only thing I ask, personally, is that you please not treat us like celebrities or journalists,” he said. The company’s Latin America operation has taken the lead, but the special will also air in the U.S. and possibly other parts of the world given how much interest the story has generated, according to a company official. In classic Discovery fashion, the special will focus on both human elements and how the rescue effort worked or, as the official put it, “the triumph of the human spirit and the wonders of engineering.” But Discovery will not be alone. On #FuerzaMineros (“Miners Force”), lagaceta041 writes: “The embrace of the 10th miner, Vega, with his wife was the longest of the day. “He was a shift boss who made us proud,” Pinera told Chileans in a televised address. “I want to thank the families of the miners who maintained faith this faith that ended up moving mountains.” CNN’s Karl Penhaul, Patrick Oppmann, Gary Tuchman, Moni Basu, Holly Yan, Tom Watkins, Ed Payne, Dana Ford, Mariano Castillo, Azadeh Ansari, Luis Carlos Velez and Madison Park contributed to this report.

Stunning The real villain in PowerPoint sex-rating ‘scandal’ - October 9, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

It’s all over the Internet. That’s the phrase that is increasingly being used to describe when a matter has become one of importance. I tried to look up Owen on her Facebook page, but she has shut it down. The 42-page PowerPoint presentation titled, “An Education Beyond the Classroom: Excelling in the Realm of Horizontal Academics,” ranked 13 men Owen was sexually involved with during college, according to their physical attractiveness, athletic ability and talent in the bedroom. It was, indeed, entitled: “An Education Beyond the Classroom: Excelling in the Realm of Horizontal Academics.” Within it, she described her diverse sexual exploits with these 13 men as “data collection.” Though they were all athletes, she claims, some were better versed at reclining athleticism than others. One of those friends, she contends, passed it on without her consent until it went viral, bringing a national media blitz and hurt feelings – especially among some of the athletes. Owen apologized for the stunt. Sex therapists around the country are now giving their opinion on the report and what they think it means. Visit msnbc.com for breaking news , world news , and news about the economy However, now that this PowerPoint is public, many have come forward to declare the usual truth about nothing being safe on the Web, about how its very presence means that anything placed there will inevitably have at least the opportunity to become a viral fascination. He told CBS News that young people today tend to have a pretty good sense of the damage that can be done when private information finds its way online. I’m talking about college-aged girls and sex, and my wife isn’t going to kill me.” I ventured down to the raucous college bar scene near Durham’s Brightleaf Square section around midnight Thursday but found foot traffic inexplicably slow. In the Duke Chronicle , for example, a writer takes issue with the idea that her act was somehow liberating.
