I was honored to be one of the press/photographer in one of New York’s finest radio station 92.3 NOW Music. Thanks to Dipstick Magazine for letting me shoot for the Nick or Treat Show. A few artists performed live in the Hammerstein Ballroom that includes Nelly, New Boyz, Taio Cruz, Kevin Rudolf and many more. Hosted by Nick Cannon…… What a great show and on the stage with the artists.

It’s a good idea to include the album that this live concert image was taken from since everyone always ends up wanting it!

concert!! Let me tell you about concert: Merle Haggard misses Bridge School concert because of illness - October 25, 2010 by jamesdean

Merle Haggard misses Bridge School concert because of illness

Merle Haggard missed his scheduled appearance Saturday with Kris Kristofferson for Neil Young’s annual Bridge School benefit concert in Mountain View, Calif., because of illness, Kristofferson announced when he arrived onstage alone.

Kristofferson said Haggard’s doctor ordered him to cancel several performances this month to recuperate. A chest infection prompted him to cancel a chunk of his September itinerary, but at the time his spokeswoman said he had been expected to recover in time to perform for the Bridge School event. Haggard’s representative was not immediately available to comment on whether the same illness prompted the latest round of concert cancelations.

The 73-year-old singer and songwriter, whom Kristofferson lauded Saturday as “the closest thing we have to Hank Williams on the planet right now,” is due in Washington, D.C., in December as one of five recipients of this year’s Kennedy Center Honors.

Jonas Concert Canceled, Glee Choir Call

MYFOXNY.COM – Entertainment headlines for Thursday, October 14, 2010.

Text of Julie Chang’s report for Good Day NY:

JONAS CONCERT CANCELED: The Jonas Brothers say ‘adios’ to Mexico. They canceled a concert due to security concerns. Concert promoter Live Nation scrapped the October 21 concert following a wave of drug violence in Monterrey, Mexico. Monterrey is the country’s richest city and usually one of its safest, however more than 400 people have been killed there this year. Fans are devastated and no new date has been announced.

GLEE HALLOWEEN THEME: The cast of ‘GLEE’ is paying homage to Halloween as they take on the cult sensation Rocky Horror Picture Show. You can expect to see plenty of pelvic thrusts and cross-dressing as the club will be doing their own rendition of the 1970s classic. There’s even talk that one of the original members of the musical will make a very special appearance at ‘McKinley High.’ The cast is looking forward to the upcoming episode and some even have past ties to the show. You can check out the episode for yourself Tuesday, October 26, at 8 p.m. right here on FOX 5.

GLEE SCHOOL CHOIR CALL: We love to showcase singing talents right here in our area. If your school’s choir or your glee club hits a high note, we’d love to have you live on Good Day. Reach to me on Twitter and who knows I could show up at your school. Go to Twitter.com/juliechangfox5 .

Jonas Brothers Cancel Concert In Mexico Due To Security Issues

The Jonas Brothers wanted to please their Mexican fans with a live show but had to cancel it.

Organizers of the Jonas Brother’s concert in Mexico are saying poor security is the cause of the cancellation of the event scheduled for October 21.

According to Live Nation,”a series of unfortunate events,” is to blame for axing the show because although Monterrey the country’s richest city violence is still happening and they didn’t seem to want to take chances of fans or the band getting hurt.

Mexican JoBro fans have been writing to the band on Facebook to reconsider and come play for them anyway.

Do you think the Jonas Brothers should take a chance and go to Mexico?

Muslim group in Malaysia protests concert by ‘Idol’ star Adam Lambert: report

A concert in Malaysia by “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert scheduled for Thursday has drawn protests from an Islamist political party in the country, the World Entertainment News Network reported Monday.

The Pan Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) said Lambert, who is openly gay, would promote gay culture if he performed in the capital city Kuala Lumpur on Thursday as scheduled.

“Adam Lambert’s shows … are outrageous, with lewd dancing and a gay performance that includes kissing male dancers,” said PAS official Nasrudin Hasan. “This is not good for people in our country.”

In November, Lambert kissed his male keyboardist and simulated sexual contact with male dancers while performing at the 2009 American Music Awards, which got him banned from appearing on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Last Wednesday, he kissed his bass player during a concert in Tokyo.

Puspal, the agency that oversees applications for filming and performance by foreign artists in Malaysia, said Lambert’s concert could go on as long as he agrees to dress appropriately and refrain from any indecent acts, Malaysian government news agency Bernama reported.

Fundamentalist Islamic groups in Malaysia have previously opposed performances by Beyonce, Avril Lavigne and rapper Pitbull.

Farm Aid promotes family farmers, sustainable food (doh) - October 1, 2010 by jamesdean

photo
Farm Aid promotes family farmers, sustainable food

Oct. 1, 2010 |(14) Comments

Meet Jason Mraz: singer, songwriter, avocado farmer.

He’s also a link to a new generation of performers and fans set to gather Saturday for Farm Aid, the benefit concert that rolls into Miller Park for its 25th anniversary edition.

On a bill that features the likes of music legends and Farm Aid founders Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young, Mraz provides a dash of pop-chart charisma and will try to bring along legions of fresh-faced fans eager to rally to the cause of good food and family farming.

“My role is to communicate with all those young people, how to keep it going, get connected in your community, how to buy local food, how to grow local food,” said Mraz, whose Grammy Award-nominated single “I’m Yours” became a radio staple.

“Farms are going to become universities in the future and are going to make a comeback,” he said.

Combining music and activism, Farm Aid has carved out an interesting history. It began as a musical plea to save the family farm in America and morphed into a platform for the good-food movement and sustainable agriculture, starring family farms.

At the core, though, Farm Aid is a dynamite music show, this year bringing together such acts as country music superstar Kenny Chesney, rocker Dave Matthews and soulful singer Norah Jones. More than 30,000 music fans are expected at Miller Park, the largest venue Farm Aid has played in several years.

Farm Aid, itself, grew out of an offhand remark made by Bob Dylan at the Live Aid concert back in July 1985. Amid a global musical spectacle meant to galvanize the world into action for African famine relief, Dylan suggested that perhaps some of the money raised could be used to help farmers in crisis.

Nelson, Mellencamp and Young took up the cause and hastily arranged a star-studded lineup. The concert sold out in three days, though few tickets were sold outside the Farm Belt.

The first Farm Aid was held Sept. 22, 1985, at the University of Illinois football stadium in Champaign, Ill.

Some 78,000 music fans paid $17.50 a ticket to attend the 14-hour show, a musical cry from the American heartland for Washington policy-makers and American consumers to heed the plight of America’s family farmers.

Fund raising fell well short of the $50 million goal, generating about $9 million. But the template for future Farm Aid concerts was set: play music, raise awareness and keep a focus on the role of farming in America.

In subsequent years, the crowds were smaller, and the amount given to farm groups averaged between $1?million and $2 million.

Three years into the Farm Aid cause, Nelson said in a statement: “I don’t want to be Jerry Lewis. I don’t want to be on television every year. I would hope that awareness of the situation would stir up enough caring people in this country to help turn things around.”

Jerry Lewis is still doing the Labor Day telethon to combat Muscular Dystrophy. And Willie Nelson is still playing for the farmers.

But the cause has evolved.

Dairy farmer Mariann Holm of Eau Claire said this week she didn’t realize Farm Aid was still going until she had a chance to attend last year’s concert in St. Louis through Organic Valley, a La Farge-based cooperative that buys milk produced by her family’s 40 Jersey cows.

“I thought, ‘Isn’t it sad they still have to do Farm Aid,’?” Holm recalled. “But this isn’t just putting another nail in the coffin of a farm. It’s become a celebration, and you can feel the hope and the victory.”

Americans have a renewed interest in where their food comes from, and in supporting local farmers, said Holm, who plans to attend this year’s concert at Miller Park – the first time Farm Aid will be staged at a Major League ballpark.

Organic Valley is sending a busload of 120 farmers to the concert. You’ll recognize them by their “Who’s Your Farmer?” T-shirts.

“It’s like a wave is building,” Holm said. “Willie Nelson threw a pebble into the water – it started as a cry in the wilderness – but then there was the rise of the co-op model for grocery stores, the Slow Food movement, and revitalizing school lunch programs.”

In 1985, Americans wanted to support farmers but didn’t know how, she said.

“Now people say, ‘I’m going to the farmers market,’?” Holm said. “The people themselves can change the direction things are going, which in turn is influencing public policy. A farmers market is a free market and these farmers aren’t getting subsidies; they’re taking the future in their own hands and responding to what consumers want. If they want a purple pepper, the farmer produces what the relationship dictates.”

Farm Aid concertgoers may not find purple peppers in the concession stands at Miller Park, but they will find hamburgers made with locally produced organic beef, served on white-wheat buns from Natural Ovens in Manitowoc.

Wisconsin rBGH-free deep-fried cheese curds, organic popcorn, and Palermo’s Hearth Italia organic pizza also are on the Sportservice’s “Homegrown” concessions menu, along with Klement’s sausages, bratwurst and hot dogs made with pasture-fed beef and pork from family farms, mostly in Wisconsin.

Not all concession items will be switched to meet Farm Aid specifications because Miller Park has exclusive sponsorships, said Sonya Dagovitz, Farm Aid’s culinary director.

But kitchen waste will be hauled away for compost. The cups and plates will be recycled. And bottled water will be sold only in reusable, commemorative Farm Aid bottles.

Farm Aid always has promoted one simple truth: Supporting family farmers and family farm-centered food systems can jump-start a fragile economy, improve public health and create a cleaner environment for future generations, said Carolyn Mugar, Farm Aid’s executive director from the beginning.

Willie Nelson may not want to be like Jerry Lewis, but he promised in 1989 to keep holding Farm Aid concerts until the farm crisis ended: “We’re here for the duration. That means when farmers get 75% of parity.”

Farm Aid organizers say they’ve raised $37 million to support farmers since the first concert; 80 cents of every dollar goes toward Farm Aid’s work, which includes political lobbying, a crisis hot line and emergency assistance for farmers.

Nelson still makes the final decisions on every grant and signs every grant check, according to Farm Aid.

He’s the entertainer Milwaukee’s world-renowned urban farmer Will Allen most wants to meet Saturday. Allen, whose Growing Power has received at least three grants from Farm Aid, will be seated in a VIP section at the concert. He’ll also be at the Homegrown Village just outside the stadium, where he will spread the message that fresh, healthy food should be affordable for everyone.

Allen said he admires Nelson “for his energy to put his friends together to do a concert every year without pay.”

“A lot of people are jumping on the ‘good food’ bandwagon now, but he’s been there, recognizing the challenges for small farmers, for 25 years.”

Hustisford sheep farmers Shelley Hazlett-Gooch and her husband, Roger Gooch, a veterinarian, will be among the thousands attending their first Farm Aid concert. The couple volunteered to survey Farm Aid participants as part of a national grass roots initiative.

Gooch at one time was a large animal vet but transitioned to small animals as family farms disappeared.

“If you look at one family working on a farm, they support the feed mill and the local businesses,” Hazlett-Gooch said. “As soon as they’re not farming, they have to go work for other people. They’re not having the vet out. They’re not supporting the feed mill.”

Mraz, who grows avocados on 5 acres in San Diego County, Calif., said farming had changed his perspective on business and life.

“Anyone with a garden or anyone who has ever watched something grow understands the real healing in that,” he said. “You get a sense of the seasons, how nothing is permanent. It’s transformative. I don’t have children, but I hear when you have kids you get a whole different perspective on loving someone other than yourself. I get that out of food, out of growing fruits and vegetables.”

Drake puts on a smooth concert this time at Radio City Music Hall: get ready to feel anxious - September 30, 2010 by jamesdean

Drake puts on a smooth concert this time at Radio City Music Hall

BY Jim Farber
DAILY NEWS MUSIC CRITIC

Wednesday, September 29th 2010, 4:00 AM

Hip Hop’s star of the moment cut a rare figure at Radio City last night.

Drake boasts a different character, sound and homeland than most of those so anointed.

Born in Toronto to a white Jewish mother and an African-American father – and first known for his acting on the Canadian TV show “Degrassi: The Next Generation” – Drake renders the old hip-hop mandate of hard-core “street cred” laughably antique.

The 23-year-old, whose name is Aubrey Drake Graham, has also broken the mold by proving as fluid a singer as he is a rapper, a rarity in a world where stars primarily known for speaking in rhythm cough up singsong vocals at best.

Live, however, Drake didn’t sing that much, outsourcing most of that work to backing tracks. That’s a shame, considering that when he did croon, he proved as silky and emotive as on CD.

Luckily, Drake’s rapping proved commanding enough on its own, aided by his sure presence. His confidence has beguiled both young men and women, evidenced by the equal split in genders at last night’s event.

Such lures have not only helped Drake sell more than 1 million copies of his debut CD, “Thank Me Later,” they’ve landed him in the news. An appearance at the South Street Seaport in June drew so many more fans than promoters expected that it caused a riot.

Nothing so theatrical took place last night. Then again, a smooth run makes sense for a star whose style proves uncommonly sensitive for rap. In the tradition of more recent Kanye West, or younger stars like Kid Cudi, there’s a melancholic side to Drake’s sound. That came through most strongly last night in the soft electric keyboards, which gave the songs a supple underlay. In numbers like “Successful,” Drake delivered his dense verse with conversational ease.

He re-created the best hooks from his CD, like the one in “Fireworks,” which literalizes the title phrase with soft, evocative pops. Though he didn’t have a singer as strong as Alicia Keys to back him on the song (as he does on CD), a joyful array of guest rappers turned up, including Birdman and J. Cole.

Naturally, Drake took time out to salute the man who first sponsored him, Lil Wayne, encouraging a shoutout from the crowd loud enough for the incarcerated rapper to hear at Rikers.

Then again, Drake needed no such tough-guy alignments to make his music real. If anything, the night proved suburban dreams have a truth in them, too.

After everything lately about concert, concert, concert and now this: Is Drake’s Concert The Best of 2010? - September 30, 2010 by jamesdean

Is Drake’s Concert The Best of 2010?

Best we ever had? Not only did we live blog Drake’s Light Dreams & Nightmares concert at New York’s Radio City Music Hall last night (September 29), we hit the streets to see what fans like you thought of the show.

“This Drake concert was definitely the concert of the year, awesome,” said a young lady with blond hair.

Whoa, that’s a bold statement. And she wasn’t alone.

“Drake 2010, Radio City, Concert of the year,” said a gent in a blue t-shirt.

Toronto’s golden boy is absolutely enjoying the best year of his career, but he’s not he only epic show of 2010. Remember Jay-Z and Eminem… Yankee Stadium… COMAMERICA Park? What about Wu-Tang rocking their debut LP Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) at Rock The Bells? A Tribe Called Quest? No? Ehn, we did agree with fans on one thing.

“As a performer, he was amazing, i think he did a good job and kept the audience entertained,” said the gent in the blue shirt.

His subject matter also ropes in interest.

“He talks about his life, instead of like, sex drugs and alcohol all the time,” said a female fan, sporting braces and the cover of Drake’s first mixtape emblazoned on her t-shirt. “It’s about his life, his feelings, girls… his loves in life.”

“I think he sings better live, he just really gets into it,” added another fan.

Elsewhere, Aubrey fans through jabs at the stage game of other MCs. No shots… sort of.

“He actually knows how to perform unlike a lot of other rappers and singers these days,” said one girl, with a smirk.

“He knows how to get the ladies and he knows how to give a great performance,” said another girl. “The lightening was awesome, any seat you’re in you’re going to love the show.”
