Sydney, Australia “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, oi, oi, oi!” Oprah Winfrey opened her Ultimate Australian Adventure show on the steps of the Sydney Opera House in front of thousands of spectators with the traditional Australian sports war cry. The audience responded in kind. Clutching a beer in one hand and with a plate of salad and home cooked burgers in front of her, the chat show host sat at a picnic table and chatted with other guests as a man fired up the grill behind her. “That was so much fun until the end. “It’s my birthday and I asked all my friends to nominate me for a ticket but I didn’t get one,” said Fran (who, like other fans CNN spoke with, took off work without permission and asked her surname not be used). “HELLOOOO AUSTRALIAAAAA!” she bellowed as the audience’s roar reached a deafening pitch. “Doesn’t matter, I caught a bus for an hour and a train for an hour just to see her.” Just engaged Shane and Angie made the trip because they both adore Oprah. She justified Australia spending about $5m (£3m) to bring her there, saying the shows will be worth millions more in tourism publicity.

“I’ve watched every episode since I was a little kid,” Angie said. A smiling Jackman then sipped wine and tasted Australia’s famous Vegemite snack with the talk-show queen, who recorded two episodes of the final season of her 24-year-old show in Australia. Winfrey said she had long hoped to travel to Australia, and taking the audience with her made the experience even richer. “I think the leaflets are still bundled up in the kitchen somewhere,” Winfrey joked. “I made a decision before I landed to not be tired,” Winfrey said. She’ll sleep on the long flight home when she leaves Australia on Wednesday. And a love festival it was, with Winfrey lavishing praise on her Australian hosts, the scenery and the citizens. “It’s so great here, and to the rest of the world watching right now, you’ve got to come to Australia.” The praise continued: “You’re so darn friendly, you must go to friendly class!” Her trademark giveaways included laptops for the students of a boys’ school in a low-income neighbourhood, necklaces of Australian pearls for all 6,000 audience members and a $250,000 cheque for an Australian man with cancer and his family. Tourism Australia looking for a shot in the arm after a lackluster decade that began with 9/11 and ended with the global financial crisisspent the last nine months working with Harpo Productions to make Winfrey’s tour a reality. Oprah’s high-power stars included Australian actor Russell Crowe, the family of the late “crocodile hunter” Steve Irwin and rapper Jay-Z. Before the Sydney shows were taped, Oprah told journalists her visit would produce a huge amount of publicity for Australia. “Some people question the five million dollars the government has put up along with our commercial partners for the Oprah shows but Harpo have invested another seven million to make it happen,” says Andrew McEvoy, the Managing Director of Tourism Australia.
