Harry Lime, played by Orson Welles, suggested in the film The Third Man, hard times produce a better class of entertainment: “In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance.

“In Switzerland they had brotherly love — they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.” Closer to home a case in point would be that during the harsh times of the seventies produced Thin Lizzy and U2. The Script are walking, living, singing proof that this theory resonates as loudly in the harsh times of 2010 as in the seventies.

With opening single “For the first time” the Script have tapped into the Zeitgeist and encapsulated the spirit of the time. The song chronicles an unemployed couple trying to get through the hard times with love alone, “Trying to make it work but man these times are hard. But we’re gonna start by drinking old cheap bottles of wine…”. Never has the message of a song been so culturally relevant.

“Nothing”, the most emotive track on the album and deals with subject matter very close to the bone, taking us to a place we have all been to, drunkenly calling our ex, clinging to hope, “If she sees how much I’m hurting, she’ll take me back for sure…and I know that I’m drunk but I’ll say the words, and she’ll listen this time even though they’re slurred…”. They put to us the idea that love can be equally as intoxicating as alcohol.

The Script are unapologetically “pop”, the type of band other bands find easy to resent. Resent them for their polished image, accelerated catapult to success, the fact that they merge deep meaningful lyrics with catchy overtones that everyone loves to sing along to, but nobody can ignore their quality. The Script unashamedly write about personal experiences and emotions we can all relate to.

Their self titled debut album was a tough act to follow and at the risk of being labelled one trick ponies, Danny and the lads have followed it up with more of the same, a catalogue of honest, modern love songs. There will undoubtedly come a time when we grow weary of this tried and tested formula, when they will need to branch out as a band and evolve, that time is not now, so for now, let’s stick to the script shall we?
