112 is a four member R&B group from Atlanta, GA, which has sold approximately 16 million records across the globe. Having great success in the late 90′s, and early 2000s, they left Diddy’s record label in 2002 to sign with Def Soul. Though they had a number of popular singles in 1997, 112 mixtapes helped to get their name known to the hip hop community.
This quartet consists of Marvin Scandrick, known as Slim, Michael Marcel Keith, Quinnes Parker known as Q, and Daron Jones. They play a variety of instruments to create their hip hop songs and rare hip hop beats, including the cello, violin, keyboard, double bass, and even the viola. They met in high school and performed at charity events and talent shows, until they caught the eye of Sean “Diddy” Combs.
The group was quickly signed, moved to New York City, and began record their first studio album. Eventually going double-platinum and selling over two million units, it was released in 1996 and was self-titled. They quickly rose to fame and saw much success, touring the country opening for the likes of Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and Puff Daddy.
Even though their next two hip hop albums were major hits, and they continued to perform on world tours, many 112 mixtapes continued to be released. The original hip hop beats and the special guests, that appear on each of the new mixtapes is what keeps fans constantly wanting more. These 112 mixtapes include titles such as, Ivy League and Skuba – Planet Swag.
In March of 2010, 112 finally made a return to the recording studio and is finally recording a follow-up to their last album in 2005. Though the reunion of 112 may not contain all the original members, the hip hop beats that made them famous will still exist. From starting at school events and creating 112 mixtapes on their own dime, to winning a Grammy Award, they certainly have a unique story.
