$65M ‘Spider-Man’ musical in a spin as third actor is injured: as I read this I could not help but to feel anxious - December 5, 2010 by jamesdean

image

Yet another actor has been injured the third in about a month and a half and the show’s opening night isn’t even until Jan. 11. But she fell ill on Thursday and could not perform that night. “Natalie Mendoza suffered an injury…and, on doctor’s orders, will be out of the show for a brief time,” lead producer Michael Cohl said in a statement.

Her understudy, America Olivo, a former Playboy cover model, will take over the role. She did appear in the second performance, on Wednesday night (December 1), against her doctor’s advice, said the actress’ spokesman Shea Martin . She was allowed to perform on Wednesday, but has now left again. “She’s a professional actress, she wanted to go in and see if she could do it, and keep mastering what is a very technically advanced show,” he added. Carney, a 27 year old American actor and singer, leads a band named after him, Carney,  and will make his Broadway debut in this production. Although local entertainment media had a blast this week, breaking from protocol and going as far as calling the production a “epic flop”, the show is riding not only on the popularity of the comic books and movies, but also on t he fact that the music comes from none other than the U2 team of Bono and The Edge.

It was halted five times due to technical difficulties. Mendoza’s understudy, America Olivo, filled in for the first time Thursday, though there was no note in the Playbill about the replacement. Cohl said the reported $65 million megashow will open as planned Jan. 11 at the Foxwoods Theatre following an unusually lengthy six weeks of previews. It declined to say how many or otherwise detail its arrangement with the Fairview, N.J., teen. Caitlin’s lawyer, John Balestriere, would say only that the lawsuit was withdrawn after discussions. They’ll be what I call tweaking,” he said. Ticket prices range from $135 to $67.50 mid-week and $140 to $67.50 during weekends.   Photos taken on Thursday, December 2, 2010. A source close to Actors’ Equity, which represents the actors and looks after their safety on Broadway, told The Post: “I’m very disappointed in Equity. They seem to have been somewhat lax about safety from the beginning.” “Spider-Man” lead producer Michael Cohl yesterday issued a statement saying that “Natalie Mendoza suffered an injury earlier this week, and on doctors’ orders will be out of the show for a brief period.

Roger W wrote How Do You Know If You Have A Musical Talent? - October 10, 2010 by jamesdean

Interesting word “talent.” One dictionary describes it as, a special natural ability or aptitude and a capacity for achievement or success; ability. If that is true then the good news is everybody has talent. How come? Because everybody is special, everybody is natural, everybody has ability, and everybody has a capacity for achievement. Success? Well what’s that? How do you measure success anyway? It’s a subjective word. Who’s to say who’s successful and who’s not?

Most people fail to see talent within them. They see it in others, but not in themselves. So that’s the first reality that must be settled. You have talent. I have talent. We all have talent. Do we all have musical talent? Probably not. If there is no real natural interest showing up in that area of our thinking and if other interests consume our time and thoughts, it may well be that musical talent is not within us.

But here’s one sign that you may have a hidden musical talent. It goes something like, “I would love to play the piano but I guess I don’t have that talent.” That word “but” is the great enemy of hidden talent. The word “guess” is no good either. All that guessing does, is stop people from following through on, “I would love to….”

How about the person with a possible hidden musical talent who’s been lulled into believing, “I must have been hiding behind the door when musical talents were given out.” Such a person is strongly encouraged to come out from hiding behind the door and find out the truth about the situation. Talents can never be exposed when one hides.

Anyhow, let’s forget about that word “talent” for a moment and concentrate on words, like: “enthusiasm,” “desire,” and “passion.” Why? Because these are not just mere words, these are emotions and if we will allow ourselves to freely express those emotions, something begins to show up for us. Regardless of whether it is in music or anything else, they will push us on in our pursuits in spite of everything that seeks to come against us. These are far more powerful than mere talent.

History is replete with talented people who started well, but they didn’t finish well and this applies to multitudes of musicians. It was not “talent” that shut them down it was allowing those emotions to cool down by focusing too much on, “but” and “I guess…..” Whether it’s for good or bad, negative or positive, each of us becomes what we think. Everything begins with a thought.

What’s your talent? Is it musical? Follow it through…..and forget about success or failure. Is it non-musical? Do the same…..and the same.

JK Rowling rejected Michael Jackson’s idea of ‘Harry Potter’ musical (this is not a joke) - October 2, 2010 by jamesdean

photo

LONDON: ” Harry Potter ” author J K Rowling reveals that the late pop legend Michael Jackson had approached her with plans to turn the series into a stage musical but his idea was snubbed because the author was not convinced it would be a success. Rowling’s series of books have been brought to life on the big screen and inspired its very own theme park in Orlando, Florida but Rowling reveals there was one big proposal she rejected, even though it came from the King of Pop himself, reports contactmusic.com. I confess, no matter how many times I hear Rowling’s backstory, I’m still drawn in, partly because the details are just so extraordinary. For me, I love the films, I love the books, and there are elements that I love around it… like the theme park. But I only wanted to do it because I knew it would be incredible,” said Rowling.

Lucky Mamome wrote this post – Where to Find Quality Musical Equipment - July 14, 2010 by jamesdean

Sourcing and purchasing quality musical equipment is not the same hassle as it used to be ten years ago. In those days there were just two options – you either went to a shop that specialized in musical equipment or you found it in the classified advertisements in both the local press and specialist music magazines. Music stores were and are few and far between, with little guarantee that you would find what you were looking for because of their limited capacity.

Purchasing through classified advertisements has always been a risky business, with no guarantee of the condition of the item being purchased. Today, thanks to the Internet, things are different, and there are numerous online stores that carry an almost unlimited selection of musical equipment, from the simplest guitar capo to the most expensive electronic studio recording equipment.

Aside from the obvious advantage of the wide range of musical equipment carried in Internet stores, there are several other advantages of obtaining quality gear in this way. Firstly, nearly all online shops offer some kind of discount, and research has shown that for some top of the range electronic equipment there are discounts of as much as R10,000 being offered – there’s no arguing that that is quite a saving in anyone’s money!

There is also an extremely wide range of equipment on offer, with the added advantage that, if you don’t happen to find what you want in one location, there are plenty of other websites to browse through where you can source the item and if necessary compare prices. Yet another advantage of making use of the Internet is the amount of information available to you on any specific item. Even if the online store itself does not carry that information (and they usually do) then it is always available for you at the touch of a button.

Tight Tony Awards race features movie, music stars: Does anyone else feel stubborn - June 13, 2010 by jamesdean

Tight Tony Awards race features movie, music stars

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Famous stage actors, Hollywood stars and big-name musicians are set to gather at the Tony Awards on Sunday, when American theater’s top honors are announced.

Arts

Critics were split on who will win some of this year’s awards, but Hollywood names including Denzel Washington, Scarlett Johansson, Jude Law, Laura Linney and Catherine Zeta-Jones are scattered among the nominees for the show, which will be broadcast from New York’s Radio City Music Hall.

Punk rock band Green Day was expected to perform along with appearances by well-known figures including Cate Blanchett, Will Smith, Katie Holmes, Antonio Banderas, and rapper and now Broadway producer Jay-Z.

Two shows that transferred from London, “Red,” a play that uncovers the angst of artist Mark Rothko, and a revival of campy musical “La Cage aux Folles,” were heavily favored to win best play and best musical revival.

Unlike previous years, competition for the best new musical award is fiercest, with “Fela!” a dance musical telling of Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti favored along with “Memphis,” about the roots of rock’n'roll and at lesser odds, Green Day’s musical “American Idiot.”

The Jay-Z produced “Fela!,” which blazed its way onto Broadway in November and tied for the highest number of Tony nominations with “La Cage aux Folles,” would be the first musical to center on the lives of black characters to win best musical since “Ain’t Misbehavin” in 1978.

TOSS-UPS

“Red,” in which British Actor Alfred Molina has been hailed for capturing the intensity of Rothko, is the bet to win best new play, ahead of “Next Fall” about two gay New Yorkers in what some critics regarded as a lukewarm season for new productions.

The best actor in a play is a tight race between Molina and Denzel Washington, who has edged ahead for his starring role in a revival of the August Wilson play “Fences.” Liev Schreiber, Christopher Walken and Jude Law are also nominated.

Viola Davis is widely tipped to win best actress in a play for her role opposite Washington playing a long married couple in “Fences,” which is also a likely winner for best play revival. It won best new play in 1987.

British stage actor Douglas Hodge is tipped to win best actor in a musical after he won an Olivier Award for the same starring role in “La Cage aux Folles.” “Fela!” star Sahr Ngaujah is less favored.

Montego Glover in “Memphis” will compete with Catherine Zeta-Jones for her turn in “A Little Night Music” to win best actress in a musical.

“Will & Grace” star Sean Hayes will host the awards with appearances by Kelsey Grammer, Angela Lansbury and Helen Mirren and other celebrities, who have been recruited by producers to appear in Broadway productions in an aim to bolster profits.

During the 12-month Broadway season that ended on May 23, ticket sales on Broadway have been steady despite some productions failing to live up to hype, including “American Idiot” and “The Addams Family.”

The Tony Awards, which do not consider off-Broadway productions, are voted on by about 700 producers, actors and writers. They were established in 1947 and are named for actress, stage director and philanthropist Antoinette Perry, whose nickname was Toni.

BestRock Operas Dominate the Tony Awards - June 12, 2010 by jamesdean

While composers like Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber still hold dominion over West End musicals in the public eye – particularly with televised cast auditions for shows like the Wizard of Oz providing a prime time advertising campaign for that traditional brand of musical – the more down-to-earth alternative of the classic rock opera is still a mainstay of the stage.

While it’s unlikely you’ll see rock operas attracting sell-out crowds at mainstream venues such as the London Palladium, this ever-popular brand of musical is still a firm favourite of audiences who know how to look beyond the glitz and find musicals that really rock. One place they can reliably turn is Broadway.

Indeed, all four ‘best musical’ nominees for this year’s Tony Awards, the prestigious accolade of American theatre, are fundamentally rock operas, though with varying degrees of integrity and acceptance by traditional rock fans. The Green Day inspired American Idiot and the Afrobeat of Fela! are up against Memphis and Million Dollar Quartet, both of which look back to the golden age of rock and roll. It’s a theatrical battle of the bands that is sending out a clear message to theatre-goers and producers alike – the rock musical is far from dead.

While rock musicals have often faced criticism for failing to live up to the ideal of a traditional rock concert, the best don’t simply aim to transfer the live music experience to the stage, but will involve an intriguing and electrifying plot that captures the spirit and attitude conveyed by the music, though this can be a challenge to pull off expertly.

Some overcome these teething problems by seeking creative ways to break down the barriers of the accepted musical form. One case in point is the classic rock opera Hair, now enjoying a new lease of life at London’s Gielgud Theatre, which involves the audience directly and still has much of the anarchic energy that made it such a controversial hit during its original run.

Others are less successful in making the transition from best-selling album to stage, something that is arguably the case with American Idiot, which Green Day fans have argued was already ‘complete’ in its original CD form. By weaving a story through songs and lyrics, songwriters don’t even require a stage to tell their musical stories, but can let it play out in the minds of their fans.

This may be one reason why so many fans of musicals seek to relive their audience experience soon after attending shows with the help of online music streaming, and it is the mark of an effective musical that the songs remain fresh and engaging even when the choreography and costumes are stripped away.
