Getting Over Karaoke Stage Fright
Have you ever been to a karaoke bar and watched other people sing in public? That experience alone can make your heart jump with anxiety. Getting up to sing yourself is a whole different matter than can freeze a person in their tracks. But sometimes the stage calls to you and you just feel a need to get up and sing. Is it possible to balance the emotions associated with wanting to sing, but being afraid to do it in public? There is no ultimate cure for stage fright, but thankfully there are several basic tips to keep in mind that will help you out.
One of the best ways to combat stage fright is to be prepared as best as possible. After all, a good deal of stage fright has to do with what is unfamiliar and foreign, so the trick is to make the stage something that familiar is with us. Obviously that is easier said than done since it will require you to force yourself up on stage to begin with. But even before that you can do things like memorizing the song beforehand to make sure you know the lyrics inside and out.
Another pre-emptive step you can take is to invest in a home karaoke machine so that you can practice on your own. You can simply start off by yourself just to see how you sound, and get used to holding the microphone. This will help you to get used to the pace of the song so that you can at least know what to expect. And when it finally comes times to sing, you want to make sure to stay as relaxed a possible. So breathe regularly alternating between your mouth and your nose, and use visualization to keep yourself calm. And if all else fails, just keep your eyes glued to the screen to let the scrolling lyrics guide you. In the end, it’s not like you’re doing brain surgery – having fun is the main point so focus on enjoying yourself and you’ll be fine.
