– The Dilemma - January 13, 2011 by jamesdean

pic

The dilemma of The Dilemma is that the conundrum at the center of the story isn’t particularly hilarious: If Bachelor A finds out that Married Best Friend B’s wife is secretly cheating on him, should A tell B? That’s a great story premise; it’s just not particularly built for laughs. Then it becomes a relationship farce about commitment-phobe Ronny’s upcoming proposal to his girl Beth ( Jennifer Connelly ). She’s a successful chef, and her parents’ upcoming anniversary celebration weighs on her embarrassingly childish 40-year-old boyfriend. Soon it morphs into a slapstick as Ronny sees Nick’s shifty-eyed wife, Geneva ( Winona Ryder ), two-timing him.

The predicament is, the movie has no honest answers for this guy-guy crisis. C+ See all of this week’s reviews

Alarming Dr. Oz stole my city view - December 5, 2010 by jamesdean

image

Good fences make good neighbors but big trees are a deal-breaker. The next-door neighbor of celebrity heart surgeon Mehmet Oz is suing the affable TV talk-show doc for planting three 46-foot cedars that ruin the lawyer’s stunning view of Manhattan. Lawsuit: Dr Oz, pictured with his wife Lisa, is being sued by his neighbour. The Post spoke with Dr. Oz’s neighbors in New Jersey , Angelo and Hana Bisceglie, who claim “ego, arrogance and spite” led Oz to take down bamboo trees and replace them with bigger, fuller, 46-foot cedars that now obscure the couple’s Manhattan view. Oz and his wife, Lisa, declined comment. “I’m very angry.” Somehow, we get the feeling Dr. Oz really doesn’t give a shit. “What a joke,” he said. ‘They did not just block our view – they knocked down the value of our house’, complained Mr Bisceglie’s make-up artist wife Hana. “I opened my heart to Dr. Oz,” he said.

“She wanted the windows to New York and the door to New Jersey,” Hana told their realtor. “I walked out and I saw the Empire State Building, and I said, ‘I want this house.’ And now we don’t have it.” The lawsuit also names the borough of Cliffside Park and zoning officials as plaintiffs, saying they failed to enforce zoning ordinances including one that limits fences to 4 feet.

Actor Randy Quaid and Wife Claim Asylum in Canada: I’m sure we must all feel panicked - October 23, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

VANCOUVER (Reuters) – Hollywood actor Randy Quaid and his wife, wanted in the United States on vandalism charges, are seeking refugee status in Canada, saying on Friday they feared for their lives. Officials incorrectly said earlier that were arrested on Wednesday. Randy Quaid and his wife Evi will be released from custody on $10,000 bail each after a bizarre run to Vancouver, British Columbia Canada, allegedly seeking protection during an immigration hearing on Friday. The troubled couple was arrested on October 21 on U.S. outstanding warrant stemming from felony burglary bust in September, delivering their intention to stay in Canada. In a rambling presentation at an immigration hearing, Evi Quaid said eight of her husband’s acting friends had been murdered in recent years and they feared he would be next. Oscar-nominee Randy Quaid, 60, and his wife Evi, 47, have been a Hollywood D-listed version of Bonnie and Clyde now for several years, skipping checks, walking out of hotels, squatting and acting strange.  Together they asked for protection at a Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board hearing in Vancouver on Friday afternoon. They were arrested in Vancouver on immigration violations earlier this week.

They also have been charged for allegedly defrauded an innkeeper in Montecito, Calif. The Canadian government wants to keep them close for fear they’ll run. The Quaids’ bail was increased at the request of the Santa Barbara district attorney’s office to $500,000 after the couple failed to show for their hearing on Monday. The Quaids, who said they needed to prepare their case and care for their puppy, hugged when the decision was announced. Evi is claiming her health is an issue. The next day, a California judge issued an arrest warrant for them after they failed to appear at a mandatory court hearing on charges they had been illegally squatting in a home they owned years ago. Evi Quaid resisted arrest at the time. A&E star and celebrity bounty hunter Duane ‘Dog’ Chapman issued a public challenge to Quaid and his wife Thursday night, urging him to turn himself into U.S. authorities or face being a segment on his hit show. “At least do it for your wife and for how you were raised. The couple said they came to Canada to relax, and were talking with an attorney in Vancouver about immigrating to Canada when they learned the warrant had been issued. Evi Quaid was booked on those charges, as well as resisting arrest.

Randy Quaid, wife arrested in Canada (shocking) - October 22, 2010 by jamesdean

A prosecutor in California says Randy Quaid and his wife have been arrested in Canada and their bail increased to $500,000 apiece. Canadian police have arrested actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi on U.S. warrants related to vandalism charges. Vancouver police refused to release the couple’s names, saying they weren’t charged with anything in Canada. The Quaids are wanted in Santa Barbara, where they missed a court hearing Monday on felony vandalism charges. A phone message for the Quaids’ attorney, Robert Sanger, was not immediately returned. A U.S. judge issued arrest warrants Monday for the couple after they failed to show up at a California court hearing stemming from their arrests last month on suspicion of illegally squatting at a home. Quaid and his wife face felony vandalism charges after more than $5,000 in damage was found in a guest house of a Montecito, Calif., home they had previously owned. It fell out of the sky – With rescue, miners’ private lives come to light - October 14, 2010 by jamesdean

photo

The longest underground nightmare in history ended safely – and faster than anyone expected. The last man out was the one who held the group together when they were feared lost, a shift foreman named Luis Urzua who enforced tight rations of their limited food and supplies before help could arrive. With the whole world watching as 33 miners stepped out into the fresh air and family members hugging and kissing their loved ones, one particular miner caught the interest of media personalities worldwide, Chilean miner Yonni Barrios. To make matters worse, the first letter he wrote was to his mistress who, at 45, is 11 years younger than his wife. Johnny Barrios Rojas’ rescue was among the most anticipated of the miners, if only to see who would be there to greet him. “We have done what the entire world was waiting for,” he said immediately after his rescue. “We had strength, we had spirit, we wanted to fight, we wanted to fight for our families, and that was the greatest thing.” Not even a full 24 hours after the rescue began, Urzua made the 2,041-foot ascent in a rescue capsule called Phoenix and emerged from a manhole-sized opening in the ground to a joyous celebration of confetti, balloons and champagne.

“The first thing he does is ends the relationship with the other person, publicly,” said Don-David Lusterman, a New York psychologist and author of “Infidelity: A Survival Guide.” “Then he has to examine himself and his marriage. However, there have been more happy developments in their romantic lives during the men’s 69 days underground.

A fourth had a wife and a mistress, too. According to the South American newspaper, when Barrios was asked who where the three people that would be greeeting him at the site; he requested his sister, his wife and his mistress. Go hug your wife and your daughter.” With hardhats held to their hearts, the pair led a joyous crowd in singing the national anthem. Accordingly, the wife of 28 years did not go out of decency but expressed how happy she is that Barrios is safe. Johnny Barrios Rojas’ rescue was among the most anticipated — if only to see who would be there to greet him. There was no way he could have known that his love triangle would turn into an international story alongside his rescue. She told the BBC: “I’ll be a little devil on the first night after the rescue, and a bride on the wedding night.” Miner Richard Villareol, 27, proposed to Dana Castro, who was about to give birth to their first child. He was the only miner that had been trapped with any medical training. He reached the surface at 12:32 a.m.

Wait just a minute: Tony Curtis dies at 85 - September 30, 2010 by jamesdean

photo

The actor suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and was hospitalized in mid-July after he had trouble breathing. Curtis lived a life that could easily have been made into a movie. Born Bernard Schwartz and raised in the Bronx, N.Y., to Hungarian immigrants, Curtis completed only one year of high school, spent two years in the U.S. Navy, and learned to act on the GI Bill, which led to a contract gig with Universal Studios. Curtis passed away at midnight ET peacefully in bed laying next to his wife in their home in Henderson, Nev.

The star received an Oscar nomination in 1958 for “The Defiant Ones,” in which he starred with Sidney Poitier. He only earned one Oscar nomination in his seven-decade career, for the 1958 crime drama The Defiant Ones . Curtis’s health had been failing for a number of years and he went to hospital in July after suffering an asthma attack. Curtis’ personal life was filled with great turmoil: He married five times; his first, and most famous, marriage was to actress Janet Leigh, with whom he appeared in Houdini after they had wed. Curtis himself was arrested for marijuana possession in London in 1970, and spent a month at the Betty Ford Clinic in 1984.

He once remarked: “I wouldn’t be caught dead marrying a woman young enough to be my wife.” His most enduring screen role, however, remains his role as a runaway jazz musician, alongside Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe, in Billy Wilder’s 1959 classic Some Like it Hot. “After the number of movies I made where I thought there should be some acknowledgment, there was nothing from the Academy.” “My happiness and privilege is that my audience around the world is supportive of me, so I don’t need the Academy.” In 2000, an American Film Institute survey of the funniest films in history ranked “Some Like It Hot” at No. 1. The film even provided Curtis with the chance to channel the spirit of his old idol Cary Grant – mimicking the actor’s distinctive transatlantic twang to impersonate a stuffy oil millionaire. Curtis — famously imitating Cary Grant’s accent — and Jack Lemmon play jazz musicians who dress up as women to escape retribution after witnessing a gangland massacre. Monroe was their co-star, and he and Lemmon were repeatedly kept waiting as Monroe lingered in her dressing room out of fear and insecurity.

“I wouldn’t be caught dead marrying a woman old enough to be my wife,” he once remarked.

In old age, the actor looked back delightedly on a career that had carried him from the impoverished neighbourhoods of New York to a high-life as a Hollywood superstar. “I’ve made 122 movies and I daresay there’s a picture of mine showing somewhere in the world every day of the week,” he said proudly. With jobs harder to find, he fell into drug and alcohol addiction. But I had to go through the drug inundation before I was able to come to grips with it and realize that it had nothing to do with me, that people weren’t picking on me.” He recovered in the early ’80s after a 30-day treatment at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage. “My life had become unmanageable because of booze and dope. Work became a strain and a struggle. “I understand him better now,” she said, “perhaps not as a father but as a man.” He also had five other children. Even into old age, he never lived quietly. “Eighty f—ing years old. I don’t feel any different now than I did when I was 30,” he told Esquire in 2006. “Dying, I just don’t feel like it.”

Surprising: TI and wife arrested on drug charges - September 2, 2010 by jamesdean

image

Rapper T.I. (né Clifford Harris Jr.), 29, and his wife, Tameka Cottle, 36, were arrested last night in L.A. after police detected marijuana coming from their car at a traffic stop in West Hollywood, confirms Deputy Luis Castro of the L.A.

Authorities subsequently searched T.I.’s car and arrested the couple for possession of a controlled substance. (Officials have so far declined to specify the drug involved.) T.I. and Cottle, who were married July 30, posted $10,000 bail and were released this morning. Looks like the legal trouble keeps mounting for T.I. . The 29-year-old rapper and his wife, Tameka Cottle, were taken into custody Wednesday night in West Hollywood after a sheriff’s deputy allegedly smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from their car during a traffic stop. The rapper and his new wife Tameka Cottle were arrested Wednesday night in L.A. and booked on charges for drug possession. The 29-year-old rapper and his wife, Tameka Cottle, were taken into custody Wednesday night in West Hollywood after a sheriff’s deputy allegedly smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from their car during a traffic stop. Deputy Luis Castro says the two were released at about 4 a.m. PT and were due back in court on the charges on September 3. T.I. was released after serving nine months in prison and three months in a halfway house. Check back soon for further information. Tip, who celebrated the #1 debut of his film “Takers” last weekend, is on federal probation following a seven-month prison term he completed in March on weapons charges. “Well, I’m just ready to put the bad things behind me and look forward to the future and, you know, just move forward and evolve continue to evolve,” he told CNN’s Larry King this year. T.I. and his wife, Tameka Dianne Cottle, were held on $10,000 bail.

“Deputies smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle,” the department said. The Grammy-winning rapper is currently on parole after serving seven months behind bars on federal weapon charges. The department’s media office said it didn’t yet have details on which specific drug the possession charge concerned. The slammer isn’t the place for newlyweds. Bail was set at $10,000 each. T.I., the multiplatinum hitmaker who has a key role in the current top box office movie “Takers,” served seven months in an Arkansas federal prison and three months in a Georgia halfway house on federal weapons charges and was released in March. He is on three years’ probation.

T.I.’s label rep is not offering a statement at this time. The Grammy-winning rapper and sometime actor ( Takers , which he also produced, is currently No. 1 at the box office) is still on probation after serving seven months in prison last year for a weapons conviction.
