Rihanna Will Sell Out Tour Dates Says Live Nation Chairman

On Tuesday (March 22), the New York Post reported that Rihanna was forced to cancel dates on her Loud tour due to poor ticket sales. Now, Live Nation Chairman Irving Azoff has disputed the rumors, and says that the pop songstress is still on course to sell out her shows.

Azoff addressed the rumors through the website of writer Bob Lefsetz, who shared the news on his blog. According to the chairman, “64% of tickets for Rihanna’s domestic shows have already been sold. And right now, they’re selling at the rate of 700 a day.”

After the NY Post ran the story, Azoff pointed out further inaccuracies. “Rihanna’s Boston show is four months out,” he stated. “Projections say that 90% of the seats will be sold by showtime. Yes, those are just projections, take them however you want. But there are other inaccuracies in the Post story. It states that break even is 15,000 when only 13,500 seats are for sale. And it says that 3,700 tickets have been sold when the actual count is 5,800. Begging where the writer got her information, because it’s so wrong.”

In addition to the projected success of her U.S. shows, Irving also notes that Rihanna has successfully sold out 56 shows across Europe and will likely do the same for 30 stateside tour dates. The Loud tour will kick off in Baltimore on June 4, and make stops in Los Angeles, New Jersey, Toronto and Philadelphia, with additional domestic and international dates to be announced. Despite news that her current tour is on par to sell out, in 2010 the ‘Only Girl (In the World)’ singer was actually forced to cancel several concerts in cities including Denver, Dallas, Phoenix and Indianapolis.

Prior to the June 4 tour launch, Rihanna will perform alongside Sugarland at the Academy of Country Music Awards on April 3.

Breakthrough band Biffy Clyro will be hitting the road with Foo Fighters for a portion of their Spring tour. The string of dates, which kick off May 17th in Tulsa, OK, will follow a run with Cage the Elephant and an appearance at the Bamboozle Festival in Rutherford, NJ April 30th. ‘Fiddler’ veteran takes turn as Matchmaker in her 1st national tour

Birdie Neman Katz will always have a special place in her heart for the musical “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Katz has portrayed several different roles in “Fiddler on the Roof” throughout her acting career, including the mother and her daughters. And now, she’s performing the role of Yente the Matchmaker in the national tour, which stops Tuesday at Arizona State University’s Gammage Auditorium.

“It’s one of those shows that keeps coming back to me, kind of like putting on warm, fuzzy pajamas all of the time,” Katz said.

“Fiddler on the Roof” tells the story of Tevye, the father of five daughters, and their attempts to maintain his Jewish religious traditions while other influences encroach on their lives. The 1965 musical won nine Tony Awards and is the 14th longest-running show in Broadway history.

The musical also has spawned many revivals and national tours.

Even though it‘s centered on Jewish culture, Katz said people have embraced “Fiddler on the Roof” because of the message.

“This is a story about community and family traditions and how folks deal with that on a regular basis, and that’s found in every culture,” Katz said.

Katz also said the music is uplifting and includes some songs “that are not only significant on Broadway but in pop culture.”

Tunes include “Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Sunrise, Sunset” and “Tradition.”

Working on this particular production of “Fiddler on the Roof” is surreal for Katz. It’s her first national tour, though she’s performed in professional regional productions.

“I’ve never done a 90-city tour, and it’s quite amazing to be out on the road for the first time at 54 seeing the country with this amazing cast,” Katz said. “I’m very grateful to have the support of my family, who did not mind me being out on the road.”

Katz has enjoyed watching younger actresses play the roles she’s previously performed.

“I’ve watched the girls playing those roles, and I can’t believe that I was once in that position,” she said.

For her first national tour, “Fiddler on the Roof” has been the perfect show for Katz.

“It’s a dream come true, and I couldn’t imagine this not being the first show that I tour the country with,” she said.
