Kate Hudson, Muse Frontman Matthew Bellamy Expecting (eventually people find out about things like this) - January 12, 2011 by jamesdean

photo

UsMagazine.com reports that the 31-year-old actress is pregnant with her rocker boyfriend’s kid. A source tells the website that Hudson is 14 weeks along, adding, “It was not planned, but they are excited and embracing it.” The insider also says that although the pregnancy wasn’t expected, the actress is excited that her 7-year-old son with Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson, Ryder, will have a sibling. In the October 2010 issue of British Elle , Hudson described the 32-year-old Muse singer as “lovely,” but wasn’t sure she was willing to get married again after divorcing Robinson in 2007. I don’t ever want to get that jaded. I do believe in love. I believe that when you really open yourself up to love, it’s the most beautiful thing.” In an 2009 interview with Modern Mom , Hudson expressed her feelings about the importance of family. “The first thing that comes to my mind is my son,” she said. “Nothing exists without your children — and my family.” In a separate interview that same year, Hudson expressed her willingness to always give love a chance. Blinders are fun for a second, but they have to come off eventually. And I believe it’s important to get to know people, to really get to know them.”

sequels is creating controversy: Get ready for sequels to’Bad Santa,’ ‘Rounders’ and ‘Shakespeare in Love’ - December 16, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

The first new projects underdevelopment will include sequels to “Bad Santa,” “Rounders” and “Shakespeare in Love.”  The second is unexpected as the original film was considered a bomb after only grossing $22 million in 1998.  The “Love” sequel is only questionable as few best picture winners besides “The Godfather” and “Rocky” return to the well for additional installments. Other properties the companies hope to develop are “Bridget Jones’s Diary,” “Copland,” “From Dusk Till Dawn,” “Swingers,” “Clerks,” “Shall We Dance,” and “The Amityville Horror.” Some of these projects will be direct to DVD or Blu-ray movies and its unclear overall if original filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Doug Liman or Kevin Smith will be involved in such endeavors. Miramax, that formerly great independent studio now relegated to an empty shell and a backlog of hits, continues rising from the dead despite all odds. The companies are already partnered on 2011′s “Scream 4,”"Spy Kids 4″ and “Scary Movie 5.”  Those films were set up prior to Miramax being acquired from the Walt Disney Company. And hoo boy, have they chosen some interesting ones.

The two companies plan on releasing sequels to long-forgotten titles. I guess we should be grateful they’re not trying to toss a Pulp Fiction sequel in there too? Those aren’t necessary components, but without those main actor ties, the sequels – coming a decade late – would be In Name Only sequels . “We are very close to these films and the new management of Miramax also feels that we are in the best position to create sequels that are at once worthy and compelling in their own right,” commented TWC’s Harvey & Bob Weinstein. Seriously, how do you even start to conceptualize a Shakespeare in Love sequel, when the entire movie ended with the lovers separated for a lifetime? Does Will just move on to fall in love with a woodsprite who inspires A Midsummer Night’s Dream ? Now in their second life (with their original fathers getting visitation rights), they are settling for money grabs based on movies that no one wants to see sequels from. And yes, despite my complaints about Rounders , it’s going to happen whether I like it or not. As always, we’ll definitely keep you updated on the upcoming Miramax sequels like Rounders , Bad Santa ( which was just in the news ) and Shakespeare in Love – so stick around.

There’s just no creative reason for slapping an old title on something generic and calling it a sequel. In a statement, Harvey and Bob Weinstein, who originally founded Miramax before selling it to Disney, were quoted as saying, “We are very close to these films and the new management of Miramax also feels that we are in the best position to create sequels that are at once worthy and compelling in their own right.

Alice Cooper: Not ‘the Peter Rose of rock’ anymore - December 15, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

“It got to the point where I was saying, ‘OK, I’m the Pete Rose of rock ‘n’ roll!’ So now that it’s a reality, it’s a different take on it,” he tells Billboard . “Now I sit there and go, ‘Wow. With any hall of fame, there are always going to be arguments about who belongs in and who doesn’t, and there will typically be outrage about people who have been overlooked. We’ve got to really get up and play, and assume the position of being in the Hall of Fame.’ It’ll be great.” Cooper says the only time he was upset about not being on the ballot was in 2009, when Kiss was nominated before him. Five other musical acts will.

It was announced today that the pair have been drafted into the organisation, along with Darlene Love, Dr. John and Tom Waits. LL Cool J is still waiting. Geils Band, Donna Summer and Chic. Diamond, Alice Cooper, Darlene Love, Dr. John and Tom Waits will be enshrined in the Cleveland hall. “You know it crosses your mind, but then you think of all the guys who aren’t in there, some of them before you,” he said. Pianist Leon Russell , the first recipient of the new Award, has been an in-demand session performer since the ’60s, and lately recorded an album of duets with Elton John. The third time was the charm for Love, who had been nominated twice before. “You realize that it’s a waiting game.” Other eligible musicians for induction this year, like Bon Jovi, LL Cool J and Donna Summer, will have to wait until next year.

Tulsan Leon Russell was honored with a musical excellence award, previously the sideman category. Meanwhile, people like LL Cool J got left out in the cold. All were nominated but denied entry into the hall for 2011. Unlike a lot of early hip-hop crossovers, LL came from a background that was heavily focused on lyricism (rather than samples or one-off novelties). Are we invisible here, or what?’ ” Cooper, along with Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Darlene Love and Tom Waits are the class of 2011, who will be inducted on March 14 in New york. Among the acts not making the cut this time: First-time nominee Bon Jovi, as well as multiple nominees LL Cool J, Donna Summer, the Beastie Boys, J.

Interesting love story: Jake Gyllenhaal Given a Prescription for Love - November 24, 2010 by jamesdean

image

He seems to have met his match, though, in a free-spirited artist played by Anne Hathaway. While the film has its laughs, it’s also a tear-jerker, so get your Kleenex ready. Is it a sex romp?  A romcom?  A medical melodrama?  A sentimental misstep?  Love and Other Drugs needs help, it suffers from acute schizophrenia, having been unable to define itself, instead co-opting every genre in the Hollywood playbook.  Its excruciatingly at times, telling the story of an up and coming pharmaceutical sales rep (Jake Gyllenhaal) is it a social ladder jumping story? – who sleeps with every nurse and receptionists he can find.  He begins a one-sided affair with a gorgeous woman in the early stages of Parkinsons disease (Anne Hathaway) who needs the pills he can give her.  It tries to be profound, emotional, funny, witty, and outrageous but winds up as an exercise in unedited self indulgence.

If you’ve seen this trailer for ” Love and Other Drugs ” (and you should, because it’s the better—though less frequently shown—of the two), then you’ve already seen the moment in which Jake Gyllenhaal ‘s character Jamie says “I love you” to Anne Hathaway ‘s Maggie. Sponsored post: If you’re looking for a great date movie for the holidays, look no further! “He (Zwick) now tries to coat it over a bit, but yeah, at first, he had seen me be vulnerable in movies, but never seen me not be vulnerable. It’s actually even better in the context of the movie than it is in the trailer, and the build-up and proceeding scenes are quite hilarious—for a reason. That wasn’t that hard,” he laughed. Maggie is a beautiful young woman and artist of some sort with Parkinson’s, a lifelong degenerative disease with no cure. Visit the movie database for more information. I could probably sell him I could do this part and I got in the room with him and I said pretty much like the character, I said, ‘You wrote this movie for me, you just don’t know it,”‘ he explained. Needless to say, before we get to the happy ending, we travel with Jamie and Maggie as move through their bumps. At that point, Anne Hathaway, his former “Brokeback Mountain” co-star, wasn’t involved yet, but Gyllenhaal worked that out, as well, and he and the director talked her into it. “We’re very much into authenticity, and the issue of women and their appetite, I think, it’s still something that the culture says that they are okay with and understand, but I think is still in some question. And I think to have it presented like this is new and probably important for women to see,” Ed said. Twelve schmaltzy montages and 110 pages of phony movie banter later, you’re either in love with this movie (not me) or wondering how embarrassing it must be to fake simultaneous orgasms in front of a film crew (me).

It’s two people who don’t want to commit, who hate commitment, and can’t keep their hands off each other. Jamie’s good looks may be Bruce’s ticket. “Yes, they like sex, but not intimacy,” Gyllenhaal said.

It might have worked if the leads had more chemistry. The charmer has a way with the office girls, and we spend a significant portion of the movie watching Jamie learn the ropes of his trade, using his seductive skills to get into doctors’ office supply rooms (and receptionists’ pants). Spending a lot of time onscreen with your clothes off requires a serious amount of confidence, but the humble actor says he turns it up for the job. Then he meets Maggie, a wonderful one-night stand that turns into a two, three, and four night stand, and then a full-fledged relationship, before Maggie finally pushes him away. “And so, I think I look at it in a whole new light and I’m definitely up for that. That’s what I’d like in my life.” “Love and Other Drugs” is out in theaters today.

Wednesdays trivia – A Young Viagra Salesman Sees Lust Turn Into Love - November 23, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

The answer is, to some extent, both. The year 1996 was, among other things, that of “Jerry Maguire,” and in its freewheeling, fast-moving first act, “Love & Other Drugs” seems to be staking out similar thematic territory. (It also has some affinities with the more recent and somber “Up in the Air” ). It’s about ambition and commerce, because life is about ambition and commerce, but it soon transmutes into a love story, because life is often that, too. Love becomes, for two people, the great challenge and the great educator, and at every step of this beautiful film, we believe it. Jamie is all kinds of unscrupulous: getting doctors to prescribe Zoloft as he secretly disposes of their Prozac supply, sleeping with the medical office receptionist to gain access to her boss ( Hank Azaria ). As the opening credits flash, the movie establishes Jake Gyllenhaal as Jamie, a likable rogue who can charm the pants off anybody. I say loosely because Reidy barely mentions a girlfriend, but Gyllenhaal’s Jamie Randall shares equal time with Hathaway’s Maggie, the funky 26-year-old artist who will be his undoing.

He gets a job as a pharmaceutical salesman for Pfizer, and some of Love and Other Drugs has the feeling of an expos é . “Love and Other Drugs” is noteworthy for the way it reintroduces skin and sex to mainstream movies. Supply your own double entendre here. Their torrid affair spills over into love. Hathaway and Gyllenhaal burn bright with passion, physical and verbal. They manage to come off as engaging even when the plot turns formulaic, insisting on forced obstacles, contrived separation and predictable scenarios. Most rom-coms spend their time trying to get to that first embrace (think “Sleepless in Seattle,” Empire State Building , final scene), but “Love & Other Drugs” spends its time trying to get beyond it. Both look fantastic — and there’s a lot to see. Nor can it be especially hard to convince an audience that you’re in love with Anne Hathaway. What sets “Love & Other Drugs” apart is what it does next, using the couple’s interplay as a way for their characters to deepen and get past the clichés to create something that is actually moving — a relationship, with all its conflicting needs and wants and desires.

The film’s exploration of Parkinson’s, while respectful, feels superficial. He’s the Jonah Hill type who occupies the wacky roommate slot that apparently all contemporary comedies must fill. The realities of a degenerative disease are hinted at but not fully explored.

This is, however, Hathaway’s movie. On the other hand, no one will complain that Zwick made room for the late Jill Clayburgh as Jamie’s mom, in what will end up as her penultimate movie role. The role is written well. He exposed fraud and worse in 2005′s Blood Diamond . Speaking of daring to show, Hathaway deserves praise for going along with the movie’s sexual frankness.

His jab at insurance and drug companies feels toothless in comparison. But “Love & Other Drugs” does not really stand or fall on the basis of its smutty, sexual humor. But low farce is only one substance in the film’s dispensary. “Love & Other Drugs” is a sometimes intoxicating, sometimes headache-inducing cocktail: a sweet, libidinous love story; a candid comedy of bedroom and workplace manners; and, most bravely, if also most jarringly, a medical melodrama involving a chronic and very serious disease.

Puzzling spiderman post – Spider-Man’s Tangled Romantic Web, From Kirsten Dunst To Emma Stone - October 6, 2010 by jamesdean

image

Over the course of three big-screen installments of “Spider-Man,” Peter Parker has struggled almost as much with his love life as he has with chemically altered goblins and evil alien goo. The fourth take on the tights-wearing wonder-boy — a franchise reboot featuring Andrew Garfield as the new Spidey — has not publicly settled on its villain of choice, but now we know at least one of the women who will tie the acrobatic superhero’s romantic web in knots: Emma Stone , who will play Gwen Stacy. All in all, I think we can mostly agree that Spider-Man 1 and 2 were good, with moments of greatness (I’m looking at you train sequence). But I think everyone can also agree that both were lacking some vital ingredients for a TRUE Spidey flick. Stacy initially popped up in “Spider-Man 3,” with Bryce Dallas Howard portraying Parker’s doomed first love. Like, Downey-Jr.-in- Iron-Man big. Director Marc Webb says the chemistry between Stone and Garfield was “stunning,” which made the 21-year-old actress the “clear choice” to play Gwen. Giving hope to nerds everywhere, Gwen found Peter’s smarts ridiculously attractive. (Isn’t college, like, a billion times better than high school?) Most of Gwen’s relatively short character history is fraught with indie-movie tragedy: Her relationship with Peter was on a perpetual spin cycle, with misunderstandings and poor circumstances constantly conspiring against the two lovebirds. Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi, who made three blockbuster “Spider-Man” movies together, departed amid story and scheduling issues over the fourth movie. But one genetically altered spider bite later and Parker was suddenly coming to Watson’s rescue after she nearly took a spill in the school cafeteria. It was then that producer Judd Apatow suggested Emma dye her naturally blonde hair red, a move that has clearly worked for her. Webb needs to raise the game here and Garfield seems like he could deliver. “I can’t keep thinking about you,” she says.

Not that the truth helps their shot at love. She then basically says, “To hell with that,” ditching out on her wedding and running off in her white gown to smooch Peter. No sooner do they lock lips, though, that Parker is called away to help in some unknown emergency. “Go get ‘em, tiger!” Mary Jane says. Peter Parker is the ultimate vessell fro our nerd fantasies..he always was. A meteorite unleashes an alien symbiote that infuses Peter with a decidedly more aggressive personality. He can sling a web and spider-sense your ass before you even get a shot in. Enraged with jealousy, Peter takes Gwen Stacy, whose life he has saved, on a date at the club where Mary Jane waits tables. Our hero dusts himself off and comes to her rescue.

All is well, at least for now. Which Spidey love interest is your favorite? Check out everything we’ve got on “Spider-Man.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.

Grab a stiff drink so you can read all about kitsch here – Italian press blasts “Eat Pray Love” as kitsch - September 19, 2010 by jamesdean

photo

“The only thing missing in Julia’s Rome is the mandolin,” the daily La Repubblica wrote on Saturday. “Eat Pray Love,” based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling memoir of a globe-trotting quest for meaning after divorce, follows Roberts’ character Liz to Italy, India and Indonesia as she searches for life’s lessons under foreign skies. At last, Javier Bardem has piped up about Penelope Cruz ‘s pregnancy. Bardem, who tied the knot with Cruz in July, has confirmed that his new wife is expecting. The red carpet duties come just ahead of the pair’s new flick’s September 22nd release date for French theatres.

“It is true,” Javier Bardem said of his wife Penélope Cruz ‘s pregnancy. And what about fatherly words of wisdom? The Spanish actors, who met in 1992 while filming “Jamón, Jamón” and teamed up once again for the 2008 Woody Allen-helmed movie “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” married in a small ceremony in the Bahamas in early July. “It is a little too soon for me to be giving advice,” he quipped. The section in Italy, where Liz savors gelato, pizza and the warm Latin way of life, left local critics fuming, however. “It rains spaghetti, the Italians are always gesticulating and following foreign girls shouting vulgarities but then getting engaged to a nice housewife to please their domineering mothers, all this under the sign of ‘dolce far niente’,” La Repubblica’s critic Curzio Maltese wrote.

Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley is a hard song. He started to play it by ear, then asked me to download a sheet music arrangement for the piano. Top 10 Greatest Love Songs of All Time - September 7, 2010 by jamesdean

Here we have a list of the top 10 greatest love songs of all time. These songs are some of the most powerful and inspirational love songs ever written. They are great for first dance weddings songs or whatever special occasion you are looking for.

10. Your Song – Elton John

Elton John’s first pop hit, it was released in 1970 and continues to be played today. Chorus: “I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words, how wonderful life is while you’re in the world.”

9. You’re Still the One – Shania Twain

Perfect for the First Dance at a wedding with the lyrics saying “looks like we made it”. The song talks about how her love still survives and goes on even though the odds were against them. Chorus: “You’re still the one I run to, the one that I belong to, You’re still the one I want for life.”

8. You’re the Inspiration – Chicago

At heart the songs lyrics were written by Sting to his X-wife at the time of their divorce. However many do not know this and it to be a light hearted love song. 2. All My Life – KCi & Jojo

A popular slow jam for dances, this song became popular in the early 2000s and has our vote for the #2 greatest love song of all time. Chorus:”All my life, I’ve prayed for someone life you. And I thank God that I, that I finally found you.”

: Is It Creepy to Speculate About Justin Bieber’s Love Life? - September 5, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

Pop-Ed: Anyone out there who has a teenage son or even a little brother can understand some of the revulsion I feel each time I read about Justin Bieber’s love life in the entertainment press. I most certainly hope not on both accounts since Justin is just 16. Chelsea Handler developed a “relationship” with teen singing sensation Justin Bieber after the “Baby” singer made two flirtatious appearances on her late night show, “Chelsea Lately.” The outspoken comedienne recently revealed their love connection has begun to sour after his highly-publicized faux-romance with Kim Kardashian. “He’s a two face is what he is,” Chelsea told MTV News ’ Jim Cantiello earlier this week, jokingly. “He acted like we were in a committed relationship, and then he was prancing around with Kim Kardashian on the beaches like they’re a couple.” Cougar Chelsea joked she’s too old to fall for the 16-year-old’s wandering ways, and said she won’t be spending another minute on their fictitious affair. “He’s using the flirty card with everybody he meets, and I’m not gonna fall for that,” she said. “I’m 35 years old. But that doesn’t make it any less creepy that cadres of editors, most of whom are well into their forties with children of their own at home, are making claims about the libidinous pursuits of a child. “Babyfaced Justin Bieber may seem all grown up when he sings flirtatious songs, but underneath he is fragile when it comes to love, because of having been born to an 18-year-old mother who raised him as a single mom,” worries psychiatrist Dr. Carole Lieberman. “The media scrutiny is adding to the problems he will have with love.

The sold-out show starts at 7 p.m., giving some fans a good five hours to bask in the reflected glory of Bieber’s floppy-haired performance before they make their way home. We are just watching it in real time know instead of on a weekly or monthly magazine schedule. In April, Australian authorities canceled his show after several fans were injured in a crowd crush. Just read the lyrics of ‘Favorite Girl’ ‘or ‘Baby’.” Because we have more celebrity access, more websites and more weeklies it feels like this is something new, but it is something that has always gone on. We just have more entertainment vehicles now to feed the desire to know more about the Biebster and dating life. Unfortunately, as Dr. Lieberman alluded to, dating under a microscope during your teen years can lead to unhealthy relationships later in life.

Review: Going the Distance (you don’t see this all the time) - September 3, 2010 by jamesdean

pic

You can’t be with the one you love; text messages and phone calls don’t make up for the loss of physical intimacy, and thousands of miles and multiple time zones often doom the relationship to failure. And it happens to movie stars and likable actors, too! Judd Apatow has shown us that relationship-comedies – which is a highfalutin way of saying romantic-comedies – can be a place for both thoughtful love stories and toilet-bowl humor. For all we know, they might be dating today. But this empty, immature romantic comedy ultimately feels as if it’s filled with all the hot air that separates New York and San Francisco , yet still manages to be a suffocating bore. The talent is certainly there. He’s an up-and-coming scout for a record label, she’s a 31-year-old Stanford University student interning at a newspaper, and soon these skittish motormouths are making all of Gotham their playground. But writer Geoff LaTulippe forgot to give them — and their surrounding friends and family — anything interesting or clever to say, other than sexual innuendos and quips about bodily functions. Thus, a predicament for the ages: Can their love survive a cross-country relationship? (Oh my.) Right out of the gate, director Nanette Burstein unleashes a full arsenal of rom-com cliches, including the obligatory falling-in-love montage. While it is true the newspaper industry has been in a brutal downward spiral since then, it seems a stretch to have a 35-year-old actress still playing someone trying to get her break as a reporter. Of course, that’s easier said than done.

One of the things I liked best about the film is how it is grounded in the grim economics of the newspaper and recording industries.

High airfares keep visits to once every four months, phone sex proves unsatisfying, they waste Skype -cam time fawning over baby panda videos, and there are only so many emoticons that can accompany texts saying “LUV U!” Meanwhile, Erin’s protective sister (an underused Christina Applegate ) worries this relationship will distract Erin, like an earlier one that resulted in her “derailed time line.” Nonetheless, the two crazy kids try to make it work despite the hurdles.

Barrymore plays Erin, a 31-year-old trying to get her “time line” back on track as an intern at the New York Sentinel after putting her career ambitions on hold to devote herself to a relationship that then crashed and burned. Though anything that begins with the squirrely Long making ridiculous loverman moves has nowhere to go but up, “Going the Distance” never gains speed. She’s earnest and sincere, yet appears to be waiting for someone to hand her a story, all fleshed out and ready to be typed up. “I’m 31,” she tells a co-worker, her tone rich with disgust as she heads out of the newsroom. The movie wants to be a serio-comic look at the often competing forces between work and love. The film has filled smaller roles with an assembly of notable comedians. Apparently, Day did research for his role at a hospital for the insane. He isn’t even afraid to make fun of this film’s target audience.

Perhaps this is where director Nanette Burstein’s background making such documentary films as 2008′s American Teen and 1999′s On the Ropes bleeds through. They inhabit hilarious scenes where the duo ruminate about nothing at all. Charlie Day contributes some hilarious bits of business as Garrett’s eavesdropping roommate, while Jim Gaffigan gets to deliver the funniest line in the movie, as Erin’s brother-in-law. Christina Applegate appears as Erin’s sister, a stuffy clean freak with a foul mouth.

`Eat Pray Love’ star Julia Roberts happy as is Why do I suddenly feel mean - August 18, 2010 by jamesdean

Roberts, a happily married mother of three, said she read and enjoyed the book long before it came across her desk as a proposed movie script and jumped at the chance to play the leading role. But she added she isn’t looking to make any big alterations in her own life. – 1 hour ago Julia Roberts says she has never lost her love of making movies.

Other pretenders have come and gone, but the power of that one film has fueled her career ever since. Roberts visited Japan for the first time to promote her new film “Eat Pray Love.” Associated Press Actress Julia Roberts arrives at Narita International Airport in Narita, east of Tokyo, Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010. The idea is nice, albeit pretty unrealistic for the average person. “Loving what you do is the secret to everything,” said the star, who is currently promoting her film in Tokyo. Now you can watch every minute of Eat Pray Love video online free, and in true HD quality no matter where you are! “I’ve realized something my mother told me 22 years ago,” she said. Roberts visited Japan for the first time to promote her new film “Eat Pray Love.” Associated Press Actress Julia Roberts arrives at Narita International Airport in Narita, east of Tokyo, Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010. “No, no changes,” said the mum-of-three. Today Julia Roberts is not the naive young man with the smile of one million who conquered the audience with his wife Bonita, today is a mature woman, a housewife who left her place in Hollywood relatively to raise a family. Roberts visited Japan for the first time to promote her new film “Eat Pray Love.” Associated Press Actress Julia Roberts arrives at Narita International Airport in Narita, east of Tokyo, Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010. Since her box-office breakthrough in 1990′s “Pretty Woman,” Roberts has done little TV work, but she is now working as a producer of a documentary series called “Extraordinary Moms” set to debut in January on Oprah Winfrey’s new cable network. To that end, I’d like to propose that not only is New Orleans the place to discover culinary nirvana, but it is also a religious and romantic destination. Roberts visited Japan for the first time to promote her new film “Eat Pray Love.” Associated Press Actress Julia Roberts arrives at Narita International Airport in Narita, east of Tokyo, Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010.

Maybe she’ll just have to settle for the dashing Javier Bardem, although the best role in the film belongs to Richard Jenkins (an Oscar-nominee for 2007′s The Visitor ), the only man who’s not interested in her romantically (nor she in him) but who manages to be more interesting than everybody else put together. “I’ve realised something my mother told me 22 years ago,” she said. His lighting and compositions are breathtakingly transcendent, eminently worthy of another Oscar nod. The audience for The Expendables is 90 percent male; the audience for Eat Pray Love is 90 percent female, although, at the screening I went to, 90 percent of that 90 percent were women 50 and older. “No, no changes,” Roberts said Wednesday in Tokyo, where she is promoting the movie’s release. “I’m good.” Roberts, who was raised a Catholic but is a practicing Hindu, said the film offered her a chance to draw from her own experiences, but said she had been interested in Hinduism before she came across the book and that she did not convert because of the shooting. Maybe the point is that action films are the wish-fulfillment fantasies of men who wish they’d done something more important with their lives than push paper, and chick flicks are the wish-fulfillment fantasies of women who wish they’d married somebody other than a paper-pusher. Beyond that, she said she would keep her beliefs to herself. On her work — and her longevity as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars — she said her inspiration has never waned.

“Loving what you do is the secret to everything,” she said.

The symmetry of that convenient love, capping off the year ? Gilbert is now married to the man she met in Bali, whom she calls Felipe in that book and this year’s best-selling sequel, Committed ? is a bit hard to swallow for some of us. ‘Expendables’ rules the weekend; ‘Eat Pray Love’ opens strong: This made me feel ticked off - August 15, 2010 by jamesdean

- Men dominated the box office this weekend in a gender battle that pitted Sylvester Stallone’s testosterone-fueled ” Expendables ” against Julia Roberts’ ” Eat Pray Love .” “The Expendables” won the weekend easily, grossing $35 million and a crucial victory for Lionsgate. “Eat Pray Love” was no slouch either, considering its limited appeal to men. The Michael Cera-starrer grossed only $10.5 million, far less than the studio had hoped. But for the soul-healing spiritual quest that flits between New York , Rome , India and Bali , she required not a solo player but an A-team of male support. The film from British director Edgar Wright, with a budget of $60 million, was a huge hit at Comic-Con that hasn’t translated to the real world. “This is enough of a paradigm shift that it’s not just another Friday night movie opening,” says Peter Sealey, former president of marketing and distribution at Columbia Pictures and now a professor of marketing at the Peter F. Way back in October 2006, when Gilbert’s “travelogue of spiritual seeking” began to resonate with book readers all over the world, to the tune of millions upon millions of dollars in book sales, Paramount acquired the rights to develop a film adaptation with Julia Roberts attached to star. Before you catch the chick flick, meet the real Elizabeth Gilbert, who penned the 2006 bestselling memoir based on her own soul-searching journey. 1. Still, “Scott Pilgrim” is likely to be viewed as a significant under-performer for the studio. For Sly and his fans, it was like he was 40 again. Last weekend’s holdovers performed in the range expected. ” Step Up 3D ” didn’t fare as well. See 10 questions for Sylvester Stallone.) Mind you, in real dollars The Expendables shrivels before two of his franchise movies back in 1985, when the average ticket price was just $3.55, compared with this year’s $7.95.

The 3D dance flick lost some 58 percent of its value for a seventh-place finish and $6.6 million of additional gross. “He’s too handsome to be here with us,” Bardem suggests.

“I became Bride-of-Writing,” she writes on her personal Web site . Rambo: First Blood Part II was even more successful, opening with $20.2 million ($45.2 million) and finishing with $150.4 million ($336.8 million). “We actually put him in the closet,” Crudup jokes. “I was writing’s most devotional handmaiden. “I think what’s been created is this passionate, evangelical fervor around the products and around the journey.” Grossman said she sent 2,400 copies of the book to customer service reps so they could hitch a ride on that journey as well. That’s the best for a solo Roberts vehicle (we eliminate such group efforts as Oceans Eleven, Oceans Twelve and Valentine’s Day ) since America’s Sweethearts in 2001; but, again in real dollars, it might not make the top 10 of Roberts hits. Losing only 27 percent of its value, the animated hit grossed $6.8 million and now boasts a gross of $222 million. At Cost Plus World Market, Elizabeth Gilbert/Julia Roberts fans can buy Tibetan prayer flags, a Buddha with a candle in it, meditation bells and wicker storage baskets, all part of the “Eat Pray Love” shop. “They all love Julia Roberts, and they all wanted to work with her. I had no, as they say, connections. You see them with her, and it’s like her and her court.” As the trio spread out across a long couch, their interviewer is stuck perched before them on a cold, metallic coffee table, with notes in hand teacher-style.

Roberts appeared on the cover of Entertainment Weekly ‘s August 2 issue, proudly revealing that she’d gained seven to 10 pounds during filming. Or, fans can visit the online site of Dogeared Jewels & Gifts, where delicate charm necklaces come with cards that read “beauty is everywhere” and “to lose balance sometimes for love is part of living a balanced life.” Hello Kitty! And ” Cats and Dogs ” rounded out the Top 10, earning an additional $4 million for a total cume of $35 million. Summer at the movies is almost over.

: Eat, pray, love — and shop - August 15, 2010 by jamesdean

Fans of Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir-turned-movie “Eat Pray Love” won’t have to settle for a dog-eared book or a ticket stub as the only mementos of their literary and cinematic journeys through Italy , India and Bali. A massive amount of related merchandise has already been unleashed on the public: handbags, jewelry, journals, tea, fragrance, furniture and something called “firming serum” (which might be part of the “pray” portion). The book-club/gal-pal movie of the summer is finally here! Though merchandise tie-ins geared to kids is nothing new, selling products based on books and films to adults, specifically women, is a more recent phenomenon. Tweet Digg The American family went to the movies this weekend, but they went their separate ways at the multiplex. The Expendables won the weekend easily, grossing $35 million and a crucial victory for Lionsgate. Eat Pray Love was no slouch either, considering its limited appeal to men. “This is enough of a paradigm shift that it’s not just another Friday night movie opening,” says Peter Sealey, former president of marketing and distribution at Columbia Pictures and now a professor of marketing at the Peter F.

In other words, a marketer’s dream. Julia Roberts, whose career has been almost as cold as Stallone’s in recent years, followed at a distant No. 2 with “Eat Pray Love.” The big-screen adaptation of a bestselling memoir about a woman’s international search for herself, opened with $23.7 million, also in line with expectations. Way back in October 2006, when Gilbert’s “travelogue of spiritual seeking” began to resonate with book readers all over the world, to the tune of millions upon millions of dollars in book sales, Paramount acquired the rights to develop a film adaptation with Julia Roberts attached to star. The Michael Cera-starrer grossed only $10.5 million, far less than the studio had hoped. So were executives at HSN, which is still selling those fans tote bags, dresses, bracelets, pillows and coasters. (The firming serum appears to be sold out.) Mindy Grossman, HSN’s chief executive, throws out phrases like “wrap-around experience” and “immersive event” when talking about the “Eat Pray Love” weekend extravaganza. Those that did attend the hyper-kinetic action love story had a great time, though: The film generated an A- from CinemaScore with audiences under 25 giving it an A. With all of the boys in place, principal photography began in fall 2009. The World,” bombed at No. 5 with $10.5 million. That year, Rocky IV took in $20 million its first weekend ($44.8 million today), on its way to a $127.9 million domestic total ($286.4 million today). It marks the second disappointment this month for General Electric Co-owned distributor Universal Pictures, following “Charlie St. Cloud.” SCHWARZENEGGER, WILLIS CAMEOS. Or, fans can visit the online site of Dogeared Jewels & Gifts, where delicate charm necklaces come with cards that read “beauty is everywhere” and “to lose balance sometimes for love is part of living a balanced life.” Hello Kitty! Stallone, 64, was last in theaters with a pair of modest retreads revisiting his glory days, 2008′s “Rambo” and 2006′s “Rocky Balboa.” They opened to $18 million and $12 million, respectively. Rambo ‘s real-dollar total would have made it this summer’s second biggest hit ? right behind Toy Story 3 , which has passed the $400 million mark in domestic revenue to become (in current dollars) the all-time top-grossing animated feature. (Read TIME’s review of The Expendables .) Roberts also had a reunion of sorts: with her fans from the ’90s, when she was the No. 1 female star and among the top box-office lures of any gender.

I feel the book was a huge catalyst in making those breakthroughs happen.” Two more themed Bali trips are planned, with spots still available. But with hundreds of “Eat Pray Love” items for sale, the product launches may be missing one thing, according to John Kremer, author of “1001 Ways to Market Your Books.” “Do they have an action figure?” Kremer says facetiously.

Astonishing: Guys help ‘Expendables’ win battle of the sexes - August 15, 2010 by jamesdean

Expendables , which employed most of the action icons of the 1980s and ’90s, muscled up $35 million, according to studio estimates from Hollywood.com. The debut was $5 million more than some analysts projected and was enough to beat Love , which did $23.7 million. That meant a demographic rarely left wanting in summer — teen moviegoers — had table scraps this weekend. The World , was a disappointing fifth with $10.5 million. Roberts portrays Gilbert, who travels the world after a painful divorce, looking for new meaning in her life. “The Other Guys” fell to third place from first with $18 million for Sony. A third newcomer, the comic-book adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. More than six million copies have been sold. Love ‘s trailers focused on Italy and food to draw older women who might relate to Roberts, whose character refers to herself as a “muffin top” because of her drooping waistline.

The movie has taken in $70.5 million in two weeks. “Inception” finished fourth with $11.4 million for Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros. studio. I put up with it because she is also serious, and that’s an unusual combination. The science-fiction mystery, starring Leonardo Di Caprio , has taken in $248.6 million since its July 16 release. First she’ll go to Italy and enjoy good food. Eventually, I settled on Bali, the setting for the last and sunniest of eat, Pray, Love’s three episodes. “Roberts doesn’t look much like Liz Gilbert — although she has indeed absorbed some of her mannerisms — after all she gets paid to look like Julia Roberts. I thought this the best place to attain the blissed- out, Zen-like state I’d read about and envied in the book. But without the time personally to track down a retreat, a healer and a spiritual guide, as Gilbert did, I was in need of some help. “Shot in burnished magic-hour light (the crew must have toiled feverishly over a hundred dawns and dusks), with rapturous attention paid to dishes of prosciutto and melon, and to the dishy men in Liz’s life (Billy Crudup as the husband she leaves, James Franco as the rebound beau and finally, Javier Bardem, as the hopelessly sensitive, sensual soul mate), the film is a glorious travelogue, a charmer.” — Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer The Final Word.

This was, in Gilbert’s words: ‘One woman’s search for everything.’ Ladies’ favourite: Julia Roberts in Eat, Pray, Love. It’s great to see her in something this light again, looking much as she did 10 years ago.
